Oilers assign Reinhart to Condors

7 years agoThe latest roster move has come to fruition as D Griffin Reinhart has been assigned to the Bakersfield Condors.
After the Oilers traded their 2015 first and second round draft choice (16 and 33 overall) to the New York Islanders at the 2015 draft for Griffin Reinhart, the last year hasn’t quite gone as expected for both parties.
Reinhart, who was a fourth overall draft choice in the 2012 NHL entry draft, has played in 29 games for the Edmonton Oilers in which he scored one assist.
The move to acquire Reinhart was the first that Peter Chiarelli made as the GM of the Oilers, and has been highly scrutinized since then. Reinhart, a player who struggled to crack the Islanders lineup, has had similar issues in his time in Edmonton.
As a defenceman touted as a big bodied player who plays a sound two-way game, Reinhart has done himself no favours in his attempts to crack the Oilers roster. Standing at 6’4″, 217-lbs, Reinhart has the size that the Oilers have sorely lacked on the backend. However, his inability to increase his foot-speed has made it difficult for him to play at the NHL level.
Last season, he played in 30 games for the Bakersfield Condors in which he scored 10 points to go along with a +2 rating. Reinhart is a player who has the natural abilities to play at the NHL level in what will likely be no more than a third pairing role, but it is up to him how he wants these next few years to go.
Reinhart is in the final year of his ELC, so this season will be imperative for him to make the next jump.
The Oilers will now look to rookie Matthew Benning and Eric Gryba to vie for the seventh and final spot on the Oilers defence.
