Oilers Re-sign Jordan Oesterle

It’s not the first pairing guy that we’re after, but the Oilers took care of a bit of housekeeping today by re-signing RFA Jordan Oesterle to a one-year (two way) contract worth $585,000.
After being recalled from the Bakersfield Condors, late in the season, Jordan Oesterle ended up being one of the few bright spots from another forgettable season. One thing that I noticed was Oesterle’s ability to skate the puck out of trouble when he had to, or make a quick pass to get the Oilers out of their zone. One of the biggest knocks against Oesterle, unfortunately, is the fact that he’s a left handed defenseman, an area where the Oilers have some options. Had he been born a righty you could make an argument that Oesterle should make the opening night roster, but since that’s not the case I’d guess that he lands in the “first call-up” spot.
Signing him to a one-year deal makes sense for both sides, and leaves the door open to walk at the end of the season or look at something longer term. For a guy that has shown that he is capable of filling in at the NHL level I think re-signing Oesterle was an easy choice for Peter Chiarelli and his staff to make. Oesterle has progressed year over year and seems to get more comfortable with each passing game he plays in. From where I blog, this signing makes a world of sense when you consider how little NHL potential/calibre depth the Oilers have on the farm. Thoughts?

TELL ME MORE ABOUT HIM

Lowetide wrote about Jordan Oesterle earlier this summer…
  • Oesterle is in the ‘less sheltered’ quadrant (Brad Hunt is getting the soft parade, look at him over there lollygagging!)
  • He is not playing the toughest competition (Klefbom is) and he is not taking the most own-zone starts in the portion of his shifts that begin with a faceoff (Klefbom, Fayne and Sekera are).
  • The color of his bubble is almost blue. Oesterle posted a Corsi for 5×5 percentage of 48.6—49.5 when he was playing away from Griffin Reinhart. Source
  • He did and does play RH side.
  • He posted an 0.83 5×5 points-per-60 total, No. 3 on the Oilers (in a small sample). Source
  • He is younger than Joey Laleggia (by one day) and Brandon Davidson.
  • He is a fast train.
From Hockey’s Future
Oesterle has spent most of the 2015-16 season with new Edmonton AHL affiliate Bakersfield — appearing in four NHL games with the Oilers during a February call-up. Slowed by a concussion in November, Oesterle has put up points from the blue line for the Condors. Entering his third pro season in 2016-17, he will push for a spot with the Oilers in training camp but could end up back in Bakersfield. Long-term he projects as a lower pairing puck-moving defenseman.
Jonathan Willis wrote about Oesterle this morning at the Journal
Offensively, Oesterle does a lot right, particularly when it comes to exiting the zone. In his short stint with the Oilers his outlet pass was arguably the best of any defender on the team; he made a lot of them and had a higher percentage of them result in a successful exit than any other blueliner on the club.
He does, however, give a lot back defensively. He does a bad job of preventing opponents from gaining the Oilers’ zone; only Adam Clendening was worse last year. He’s also lousy at retrieving pucks that the opposition dumps in. Edmonton’s best rearguards won possession of opposition dump-ins between two-thirds and three-quarters of the time; Oesterle only managed to it half the time.
