Oilers Trade for Patrick Maroon

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired Patrick Maroon from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Martin Gernat and a 4th round pick in 2016. The Ducks will also retain 25% of Maroon’s contract for the next two years.
After the deadline had come and gone, Peter Chiarelli revealed that he had indeed made a deal that hadn’t cleared through the trade queue at that time. Fast forward and we found out that the Oilers had traded ghost prospect Martin Gernat and a 4th round pick in 2016 to the Anaheim Ducks for giant human Patrick Maroon. The deal comes after Chiarelli said that he would like to get bigger throughout the lineup and he did just that with this deal.
In Anaheim, Maroon was a guy that could play up and down the roster including some time spent alongside Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. Admittedly, Maroon had been having a down year but it’s worth noting that his ice time has dropped from as high as 18 minutes per night with the Ducks last year in the playoffs to anywhere from eight to 15 minutes this season. If you’re into the fancy stats, Maroon has been a 50%+ Corsi player over the last three seasons which would indicate that he’s generally creating more than he’s giving up. Seems like a reasonable gamble from where I blog.
At the end of the day, the Oilers give up very little for a player that improves their team today as opposed to a magic bean that may help them down the road. As an added bonus, Anaheim will be picking up 25% of Maroon’s tab over the next two seasons giving the Oilers a cap hit of only $1.5 million for a guy that has produced 34 points as recently as last season. In case you’re wondering, the Oilers had three guys (Eberle, Hall, Nuge) with more points than Maroon’s 34 from last season. As far as bets go, I’d say this was a good one.

PROS AND CONS

  • PRO: Maroon is gigantic and the Oilers desperately need some size in their lineup
  • PRO: Comes in as a guy that can play right now as opposed to Gernat and the 4th that may never play.
  • CON: Skating has been described as “average” for an NHL player
  • PRO: $1.5 million for a guy that can bang, crash, and has a little bit of touch isn’t a bad deal at all.
  • PRO: Beard game is stellar (see above photo).
  • CON: Some scouting reports describe Maroon as inconsistent (not really a surprise for a bottom six player with upside).
  • PRO: Maroon is an underrated colour and hopefully this trade will bring light to that.
  • CON: The Oilers now have less magic beans and I know how much you guys love your beans.
  • CON: Some Oilers fans really overvalue 4th round picks.
