Oilers trade John Marino for a 2021 6th round draft pick

4 years agoThe Edmonton Oilers have announced that they have sent unsigned draft pick John Marino (played at Harvard since 2016) to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a conditional 6th round pick in the 2021 NHL entry draft.
In what has become a Friday tradition (of the last two weeks), Ken Holland has pulled off a trade. Admittedly, this one will have less of an impact on the team going forward than last week’s blockbuster Milan Lucic for James Neal trade.
In exchange for Marino, the Oilers receive a conditional 6th round pick in the 2021 NHL entry draft. The conditions of the trade are as follows:
The Oilers will receive a 6th round draft pick in the 2021 NHL entry draft if:
- If Marino signs an ELC with the Penguins prior to the start of the 2021 NHL entry draft
OR
- If Pittsburgh trades Marino’s rights as an unsigned draft pick to another team prior to the 2021 NHL entry draft
What it means is that Marino was likely not going to sign with the Oilers so Holland and co. cut bait and recouped a little of their losses.
Marino has been playing with Harvard since 2016 and is set to play his fifth year for the Crimson as their captain.
