Oilers trade Moroz for Samuelsson

Wednesday afternoon, the Oilers traded a former Oil King for a former Oil King.

Both Mitch Moroz and the newly acquired Henrik Samuelsson were members of the Edmonton Oil Kings and played integral parts in the team’s 2014 Memorial Cup win. Samuelsson was selected 27th overall by the Coyotes in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. 

Five picks later, the Oilers selected Mitch Moroz with the 32nd pick. Samuelsson had a solid first professional season in the AHL scoring 40 points in 68 games but has since run into injury troubles. Last season, he scored 12 points in 43 games and this season he only has three points in 20 games.

Samuelsson has played in three NHL games, scoring no points.

Mitch Moroz’s first professional season saw him score nine points in 66 games to go along with 169 PIM. Last season, he put up a career-high 10 points in 40 games. This season, he has three points in 17 games.

The trade appears to be one to provide some more depth to the Oilers organization down the middle of the ice. 

23-year old Henrik Samuelsson is a right shot and stands at 6’3, 209 lbs. He is a big player who likes to be physical. 

Beyond that, he also has a history of putting up points. Over his 162 regular season WHL games, he scored 198 points. Come playoffs, he scored 56 points in his 60 games. 

During the 2014 Memorial Cup, he scored a whopping 13 points in nine games making him the highest scoring player in the tournament. 

While Moroz had been trending away from an NHL career, Samuelsson still seems to have some promise at NHL time. 

Both Samuelsson and Moroz are Restricted Free Agents exiting their entry-level contracts.
