The Edmonton Oilers can seize sole possession of second place in the North Division with a win on Friday when they open a home-and-home weekend series with the Calgary Flames as small +100 road underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Edmonton enters the weekend on a roll, posting wins in seven of nine outings to pull even with the Montreal Canadiens going into Friday night’s matchup at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Oilers vs Flames | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Oilers split a two-game home series with the Winnipeg Jets earlier this week, capped by Wednesday’s 3-2 victory as -140 chalk. The team has also been a steady performer on the road during its current surge, posting wins in three of four contests away from Rogers Place. However, the Oilers’ lone road defeat during their current 7-2-0 run came in Calgary, a 6-4 defeat while listed as +110 underdogs at online betting sites.
The key to Edmonton’s success during its resurgence has been steady defense. The Oilers have given up an average of just 2.20 goals per game over their past five outings, and just three total goals during their current three-game win streak on the road. That has contributed to a steady 5-2 run for the UNDER in totals betting when Edmonton hits the ice. However, when the defense breaks down, it does so in a big way. The Oilers have allowed six goals in three of their past four losses, going 1-6-0 this season when allowing more than three goals.
The Oilers also have work to do to reverse their current shaky run against Calgary. Edmonton has struggled to find the back of the net at times while picking up just three wins in its past 11 dates with the Flames. The team has particularly struggled in meetings with the Flames at Rogers Place, scoring just seven total goals while losing three of four.
However, the team has shown signs of a turnaround in its past two visits to Calgary, scoring 12 total goals in those games after averaging just 1.89 goals in its previous nine meetings.
The Flames, meanwhile, enter Friday’s matchup set as -120 favorites. Calgary will look to be on the rebound after being routed 5-1 by the visiting Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. The Flames have posted wins in three of the last four meetings but have struggled this past week, getting outscored by a wide 11-6 margin while losing outright in two of three contests.
