Edmonton is coming off a frustrating 2-1 loss in Vancouver on Saturday, which marked the team’s first loss in five outings heading into Monday’s matchup at Scotiabank Saddledome.

After averaging 4.75 goals per game during a steady 4-0-0 run, the Oilers were unable to solve Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko in Saturday’s defeat. However, the loss did not result from a lack of effort or opportunity. Edmonton outshot the Canucks by a wide 13-4 margin in the first period, and by a 35-28 margin on the night, but saw its only goal come on the power play late in the opening frame.
While the Oilers have enjoyed recent success with the man advantage, potting five power play markers over the past four games, they have struggled at times to score at even strength. The team has been limited to two or fewer goals at even strength in six of its past nine games, and has compiled a dismal 2-4-0 record in those contests.
However, steady defense and strong goaltending have made up for that lack of production on the road. The Oilers have slammed the door on opposing shooters during a 6-1-0 run on the road, compiling a sparkling 1.29 team goals-against average during that stretch. That has spawned a steady run for the UNDER at online sports betting sites, which has paid out in six of Edmonton’s past seven road contests.
The Oilers have also had Calgary’s number since opening their season series with a 6-4 loss. Edmonton has since tallied three straight wins over the Flames, holding Calgary to just four total goals in those contests. However, consistent success has eluded the Oilers when they visit Calgary. The team has posted just three wins in its past eight visits, and has failed to record consecutive victories at the Scotiabank Saddledome since December 2017.
Edmonton’s uneven offensive production couldn’t be coming at a better time for the Flames, who enter Monday’s series opener as -115 home favorites. Calgary is undefeated in two outings since Darryl Sutter took over head coaching duties, after completing a two-game sweep of the visiting Montreal Canadiens with Saturday’s 2-1 victory.
The Flames have allowed just two total goals in their two wins with Sutter behind the bench, Calgary, though, has struggled to maintain momentum this season, posting three straight wins on just one occasion, back in early February.
