The Edmonton Oilers laid an egg last night, falling 8-1 to the Vancouver Canucks in their season opener.
Leon Draisaitl scored the Oilers lone goal of the game; however, the game was already gone. The Canucks had already scored four goals before the Oilers found the net. Brock Boeser had himself a night for the Canucks, scoring four goals. Conor Garland, Elias Peterson, JT Miller and Dakota Joshua got in on the action, too, with their first goals of the season.
Additionally, after a great pre-season, Jack Campbell was pulled. The decision came after Campbell allowed four goals on 16 shots, but was it really his fault? Stuart Skinner did not go in there and shut the door either, allowing four goals, too.
So what happened? There are plenty of questions to be asked about what happened last night, including whether the absences of Mattias Ekholm are this noticeable. Is the goaltending good enough? Where was the work ethic from everyone? Tyler Yaremchuk and Liam Horrobin will break it all down on Oilersnation Everyday live at noon. If you want to participate in the conversation, head to the Oilersnation YouTube channel, subscribe, and then drop your message in the Century Mile Racetrack and Casino live chat.
On top of that, Tyler and Liam will take a look around the NHL from last night. Connor Bedard scored the first goal of his career, the Toronto Maple Leafs came from behind to beat the Montreal Canadiens off the back of an Auston Matthews hat trick, and the Calgary Flames paid tribute to Chris Snow.
