On February 28th, 1990, the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings combined to set a record for the most penalties in a hockey game with 86 infractions given out on the night. Once again, if you’re not following hockey historian Mike Commito on Twitter then you’re definitely missing out.

As the old Rodney Dangerfield saying goes, “I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out” and this matchup between the Oilers and Kings certainly fits that bill. In total, 356 penalty minutes were handed out (199 for the Oilers, 157 for the Kings) in a game that can only be described as a brawl that looked more like a scene from Road House than an NHL game.

Then again, line brawls like this were much more common in the 80s, whereas seeing the same type of melee is almost unheard of nowadays. As you’ll see in the video (below) things really started to kick off when two former teammates, Mark Messier and Marty McSorley, started trading punches behind the goal line. Once those guys started going then the fuse was lit on what would become a historic night for PIM lovers.

Fights and brawls aside, there was an actual hockey game that took place on that night. The Kings ended up winning the match by a score of 4-2 with Wayne Gretzky leading the way for LA with three points (1G, 2A).
