There won’t be another Battle of Alberta in the NHL playoffs this year.
After the Winnipeg Jets cruised to a 6-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Monday, the winner between the Nashville Predators and Calgary Flames would stay alive while the loser would be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
Nashville opened the scoring in the first period, the Flames tied it in the second, and the two teams exchanged goals in the third frame before eventually going to a shootout to determine the winner. Jonathan Huberdeau scored on Calgary’s first shot but the Flames weren’t able to get another puck past Juuse Saros after that.
Cody Glass scored for Nashville in the third round to keep the Preds alive and then Thomas Novak won them the game in the fourth round, ultimately ending Calgary’s season in the process…
It’s pretty incredible that the Predators even remain in the mix for a playoff spot given the players they’re missing right now. They traded away Mattias Ekholm, Mikael Granlund, and Nino Niederreiter ahead of the trade deadline and Roman Josi, Filip Fosberg, and Ryan Johansen are currently on the shelf with injuries.
“This is my second time missing the playoffs in the NHL,” Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson said. “It was the COVID year the last time. We weren’t good enough that year. But this year, it feels like looking around this room, we had the squad to do it. That probably makes it more frustrating. We didn’t do it. Being in so many games and not coming out on the winning side of those, that’s probably the one thing that’s the most frustrating.”

As it stands…

Both Nashville and Winnipeg have two games remaining. The Preds will host the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche while the Jets will face the Wild and the Avs on the road. The Jets would need to lose both of their remaining games in order for the Preds to jump them in the standings.
