This looks nice, right? The Oilers are sitting at the top of the Pacific Division after two weeks of play with a 6-1-0 record. Pretty much everything is going right for the team so far. @Connor McDavid and @Leon Draisaitl have found another gear, @James Neal is providing another scoring punch, and the team’s power play has been lethal. The key behind Edmonton’s early-season success has been the offence, as the Oilers rank second in the league in goals for. While the offence has been the story, the defence and goaltending have also been solid and the penalty kill is much improved from last season. The schedule has been light thus far but getting points in the bank early on is never a bad thing.

Right behind the Oilers are another surprise, the Anaheim Ducks. I mentioned in my season preview a few weeks back that Anaheim was a decent bet to have a bounce-back season if they could stay healthy. That’s what we’ve seen so far. With all of their key players healthy, the Ducks are rolling early on in the 2019-20 season. They’re in the middle of the pack offensively, which is what you’d expect, but their rock-solid defence and elite goaltending has been the team’s main strength. The Ducks’ goalies have combined for a .943 save percentage and have allowed just 12 goals in seven games.

The Golden Knights have come as advertised so far this year, though it’s only translated to a 4-3 start. The team packs a deep scoring punch as seven different forwards, including rookie @Cody Glass, have contributed at least two goals through the first seven games. The Golden Knights have dealt with a couple of key injuries early on. Nate Schmidt, the team’s top defenceman, suffered a lower-body injury in the team’s season opener and hasn’t played since. Backup goalie @Malcolm Subban also got hurt in his first start and Marc-Andre Fleury has had to carry the load entirely thus far.

Last season’s Western Conference Regular Season Champs have looked mediocre to start the 2019-20 season. The Flames are sitting in the middle of the pack offensively and defensively through seven games. A big issue thus far has been a lack of depth scoring, as @Mark Jankowski, @Sam Bennett, @Derek Ryan, @Mikael Backlund, and @Milan Lucic have yet to score a goal. David Rittich has been solid in net, but backup Cam Talbot had a rough outing in his first appearance, allowing three goals on 20 shots. That said, the Flames also had a slow start to their season last year before finally getting rolling in November.

After back-to-back losses on the road to start the season, the Canucks are on a roll, winning three games in a row to put them at 3-2-0 after two weeks. Keeping the puck out of the net has been key for the Canucks early on, as their goalies have combined for a .933 save percentage and the team has allowed just 11 goals. On the flip side, the offence hasn’t arrived yet as the team’s top forwards, @Elias Pettersson, @Bo Horvat, and @Brock Boeser, have combined for just three goals thus far.

After a horrendous start to the season, the Sharks have pulled themselves back to life. San Jose dropped their first four games of the season, getting outscored 17 to 5 in the process. Since bringing back @Patrick Marleau, though, the Sharks have won three games in a row. The biggest issue from last season still persists — goaltending. The Sharks’ goalies have combined for an ugly .896 save percentage through seven games so the team is going to have to find more offence to compensate for it.

The Coyotes look like a carbon copy of last year’s team. Nobody can score on them and they can’t score on anybody. Through five games, the Coyotes have allowed the fewest goals in the league and they’ve also scored the second-fewest goals. Arizona brought in @Phil Kessel and @Carl Soderberg to help contribute offensively, but neither player has scored a goal yet. At some point, the Coyotes will need to find some offence in order to take the next step forward.

As expected, the Kings are sitting in last in the Pacific Division through two weeks. While pretty much everyone assumed they would be the worst team in the division again, the way they’ve gone about it has been a little surprising. The Kings have been pretty good offensively, scoring 20 goals through six games, but they’ve had a tough time keeping the puck out of the net. One of the weirdest stories this season has been @Jonathan Quick, who owns a .793 save percentage through three games.
