Sometimes people in the spotlight talk too much. Take our good friend Souljaboy right here for example. We get it Souljaboy. You are hot right now. Hotter-than-Paris-Hilton-in-2007-hot. But do we really need to hear you tell us about how “you’ve got the munchies” about 1,389 times in a three minute video clip? No. On behalf of society and your actual fans, we do not. Kindly stop granting us all such unprecedented access into your life.

This type of non-stop commentary is exactly the flip side of someone we actually want to hear from these days,  former Oilers Head Coach Craig MacTavish. He is the anti-Souljaboy, remaining silent despite the fact that everyone – fans, media, Souljaboy himself – want to hear what he has to say about his dismissal as Head Coach of the Oilers.

Friday will mark one month since GM Steve Tambellini shook off rumors that he was not in charge of this here hockey squadron and sent Coach MacT packing after 8 years as Head Coach of the Oilers. But that was almost a month ago – where has the four time Stanley Cup Winner been exactly during that time?

We get it. MacT is a competitor that hates to lose. He is probably incensed that he was let go as Coach and with a year remaining on his contract he doesn’t want to do or say anything that could put that contract in jeopardy. Perhaps the Oilers went so far as to make him sign some sort of gag order preventing any hilarious “on-my-way-out-of-town-here-is-the-real-deal” type press conferences. Perhaps he is going to take a year off and return in some capacity with the team and doesn’t feel that a good bye is necessary. Whatever the case, we think it is a bit odd that one of the most quotable coaches in the NHL hasn’t had a press conference to reflect on his 20 plus year career with the Oilers.

As someone who firmly believed it was time for a Coaching change we also will be first to say that MacTavish is a cornerstone of this franchise and deserves better than to be dismissed and shot off into outer space without so much as a good bye. We think that he has been a major part of this franchise for over 20 years – give or take the odd trade – and should ultimately have his number retired and be deservedly honored by the fans of the Oilers whom he has so served so tirelessly as both player and Coach.

If this silence is self imposed then we can suppose we understand. MacT has no responsibilities or duty to anyone in the Oilers organization, much less any of us unwashed goof balls that make up the fan base. But a month after the day MacTavish was FMNF’d a lot of the emotion surrounding the issue must be starting to dissipate to some degree as we finally stagger into the glorious 2 ½ week Edmonton summer. Now is the time to reflect back on a lengthy career before the next phase begins. Because you just know that MacTavish will probably end up signing with a new team in some capacity or other and at that point he will be unwilling or unable to comment on “anything to do with the Edmonton Oilers out of respect to his new team.” We can see it now.

Come on Coach – don’t let the first time you face the media in Edmonton be when you return with your new team. Allow for the send off you deserve and release all of the 15 page retrospectives that the scribes of this city have had sitting on their collective hard drives for over a month now.

You deserve better.
