GDB 14.0 Wrap Up: McDavid wins it in OT, Oilers take the money and run

The Oilers should be buying Talbot an edible arrangement after this one. Final Score: 2-1 Oilers in OT
After Sunday’s horrible loss to the Red Wings, the Oilers needed to have a better effort tonight. Had. To. Happen. I don’t know what kind of lightning focus or meditation (or medication) it was going to take to even resemble the 2016-17 team, but it needed to happen against the Islanders. With the Oilers facing Jordan Eberle for the first time and also having the issue of not being able to score outside of their top six, it was insanely important that Edmonton not only got a good start but also got some secondary scoring to power them through. Well… either that or completely steal one, I guess.
Though the Oilers didn’t necessarily get the start (or game) they wanted, Cam Talbot was dialled in and that laser focus was able to keep them in the game when they were back on their heels and hanging on for dear life. After trading goals in the middle frame (complete with Eberle going top shelf), the Oilers seemed to fall asleep and it almost looked like they were waiting for something to happen. I don’t know whether they were laying back waiting for turnovers or what, but it wasn’t a great look. The problem with that strategy was that the Islanders played a really solid hockey game, and the Oilers were lucky to walk away with two undeserved points. Then again, lady luck can be a tricky mistress.
We wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring (his fourth) after he got in alone on Greiss and smashed the puck through the goaltender’s legs. The Islanders had been pouring on pressure up until that point and Leon’s goal did a good job of settling things down a little bit.
  • Is Connor hurt a little bit maybe? He didn’t really look himself tonight. That said, after the Oilers held on for dear life and got the game into overtime, it was the captain who sealed the deal (his sixth) with a beautiful give and go play with Leon Draisaitl.
  • Cam Talbot was rock solid after having a shaky game against the Red Wings on Sunday. He kept the Oilers in the game even when they shouldn’t have been and he gave them a chance to win. Frankly, he did win them that game. He stole it. Dadbot finished the night with 36 saves and a .973 save%.
  • Shout out to Darnell Nurse for playing a team-high 22:19 and looking pretty damned good while he was at it. Let’s hope the development continues.
  • Zack Kassian had a good night but you can tell that he’s gripping the stick a little bit. He had some really good chances to shoot the puck but kept going for an extra move that ended up not working out. Shoot, big man. You’ve got a good one.
  • Shoutout to whoever gets that SUV into the corner for every home game. I forgot that the Islanders had that and it literally made me laugh out loud when I saw it. I really don’t know why I think that’s funny but it’s just something about the idea of going to a hockey game and leaving thinking that you need a new car that is funny.
  • Credit where credit is due, the Oilers killed off all three penalties they faced and didn’t really give the Islanders many good chances.
  • NO BEETS FOR ME!

THE FACE PALMERS

  • As far as third periods go, the Oilers couldn’t have done much worse. They’re damned lucky that Cam Talbot was standing on his head because they did not deserve to get through those 20 minutes unscathed. They got two shots on net in the final period. Two. That was awful hockey to watch.
  • Man, how weird was it to see Jordan Eberle in a different jersey? I know I’ll have people telling me to get over it, but I won’t apologize for being a little bit salty to see him producing for another team when the team he left is lacking offence. Were you surprised when he scored? I wasn’t. Assisted by Barzal too? You don’t say.
  • Drake Caggiula left the game after blocking a shot off of his leg and dropping to the ice.
  • The power play is a big problem. It’s like everyone knows what the Oilers are trying to do just as much as they do. Not ideal. Big problem.
  • Speaking of the power play, how did the Islanders only get two calls all game? No way they didn’t do a single thing wrong in the final 40 minutes of the hockey game.
  • Which genius on the scouting staff thought that trading a first round and second round pick for Reinhart was a better idea than drafting Barzal? Which one? Show yourself.
  • Am I allowed to mention how good Barzal looks or nah? I’m sure Reinhart enjoyed the highlights of tonight’s game.
  • The Oilers were 35% in the faceoff circle after being so good over the past while.
  • I know the Oilers had 25 shots on goal but how many of those came from the outside? I’d guess a majority.
