Random Thoughts: Duncan Keith, Vlad Tarasenko, Maroon Three-peats, and more

It’s another sunny Saturday in Edmonton and that means your ol’ pal Baggedmilk is back with another dose of Random Thoughts. As always, I’ve emptied my brain into this here blog post with all of the hockey thoughts that have been rolling around up there and I invite you all to join me for a leisurely walk through my idea factory.

DUNCAN KEITH

Yesterday, we had Frank Seravalli on Oilersnation Radio and I had the chance to ask him about a couple of different names that are circling Edmonton Twitter these days, and when it came to Duncan Keith, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved to hear that the trade talks between the Oilers and Blackhawks have cooled off.
“I think it’s clear at this point that the talks — or whatever it was going on — between the Oilers and the Blackhawks in regards to Duncan Keith have cooled off a bit, and I do think that there’s a big game of chicken that’s going on right now… (Keith) wants to move on. He’s played almost 1200 games there and done everything you can do, and by all accounts, would like to be a little bit closer to some family. So, he’s given the Hawks four teams that he’d like them to try and facilitate a trade to — Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary. Obviously, the Oilers have expressed interest, but my understanding is, at least from a couple of days ago, that whatever interest they expressed, the package has been walked back a little bit. A lot of people believe that (the package) included Caleb Jones, who the Oilers understand and believe at this point that he will be exposed in the expansion draft anyway and may be taken… The other complicating factor here is that the Blackhawks, to my knowledge and reporting, are not willing to retain any salary on his deal. That’s another part of it for the Oilers. They may like Duncan Keith, they may think he’s the perfect guy to play on their second pair, but they probably don’t necessarily want to pay $5.54 million to get him.”
If Frank is right — and I 100% believe that he is — then having to trade and asset(s) to bring in Duncan Keith at $5.54 million is the kind of move that the Oilers will surely regret. I mean, the guy seemingly has only four teams he’d be willing to waive his no-trade clause for and I don’t see why the Oilers should be expected to take on the full contract, especially if Chicago is unwilling to take on a bad deal in return as Seravalli later confirmed in our interview.
Put another way, picking up Duncan Keith is like grabbing pizza when you’re wasted. You know you want it, but I doubt there’s a day-old slice out there that you’d be willing to pay $2000 to get.

VLADAMIR TARASENKO

When you’re the fan of a team that needs scoring and a player like Tarasenko becomes available, it’s hard not to think about what it would be like to have him parked on Connor McDavid’s left side. But before we get to that, I asked Frank Seravalli what the hell is going on between Tarasenko and the St. Louis Blues.
“That is a relationship that’s fractured beyond repair. I’d be very surprised if Vladamir Tarensko is coming back to St. Louis. His health is a big reason he’s likely moving on. There were two surgeries there on his shoulder that were not successful. He kept have the same injury recurring and going over it again, and I think that was problematic. I think at some point along the line when the surgery was botched so to speak, there were some questions from the Blues to Tarasenko about his commitment to rehab and that rubbed the player the wrong way. I think there was some lingering discord over Ryan O’Reilly being selected as the team captain once Alex Pietrangelo moved on, and those are all things that have contributed to this fraying relationship. And for a guy that also hasn’t been healthy or able to produce at the level he and everyone else is accustomed to, that’s just has everything trending towards the fresh start he’s likely going to get.”
So if he’s going to move anyway, would this be a guy Ken Holland should be kicking tires on even though he played only 34 games over the past two seasons?
“I think he’s exactly what the Oilers need in terms of an archetype player as a finisher. You need someone that you can put on the wing, can play with McDavid, and finish all those ridiculous sequences that this team has. But I don’t know at this point, and I have to dig in and get the answer to this, Tarasenko has provided the Blues with a list of teams — are the Oilers on it? Would he want to go there? From a cap perspective and from a term perspective… Everyone is looking at that $7.5 million and saying ‘that’s a lot of money.’ I think for the value he provides when he’s healthy — 35-40 goals, and he’s consistently proven he can do that, and only for two years — I would be taking the risk.”
From there, Tyler asked what the Blues may be looking for in a deal for Tarasenko, and Frank speculated that it’s going to take some actual
“I don’t think it’s going to be pick and prospect. This is more along the line of a hockey trade that works for the Blues where they can get pieces back that they can use.”
Let’s say for the purposes of this exercise that the Oilers are on Tarasenko’s list: would you be willing to gamble? How much would you spend? If the ask starts with Kailer Yamamoto or something like that, would you be willing to play ball? I think I would do it. High risk, high reward.

PAT MAROON

I was honestly surprised to find out that some Oilers fans aren’t happy for Pat Maroon after he completed the three-peat and won his third consecutive Stanley Cup. Personally, I loved Maroon’s time in Edmonton and would have actually preferred to see him stick around over Lucic, but that’s not the way things happened, so to see him keep winning makes me happy. Not to mention, have you seen the video of Maroon’s moment with a fan after the final buzzer? This is the kind of stuff that makes you a legend in this league, and I’m happy for the guy that seems to get everyone on his side no matter where he goes. Good for you, Big Rig.

PETRY’S EYES

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Jeff Petry’s bloodshot eyes were going to haunt my dreams, and after reading how it happened, I felt legitimately grossed out to think that whatever pain/yuckies Petry felt in the moment was enough to make his eyes turn red like the devil’s ass. Our bodies are weird, man. How did this happen? Could you imagine? Gross.
