It’s not often you see musicians giving out endorsements for their Stanley Cup favourites, but that’s exactly what happened this week when rapper Tech N9ne put his weight behind the Edmonton Oilers.
Known for hit songs “Face Off,” “Caribou Lou,” and “Like I Ain’t,” the rapper was at the Super Bowl media availability day on Monday where What Chaos!’s Pete Blackburn and DJ Bean caught up to him.
Bean: Tech N9ne, will you be going to the Golden Knights – Oilers game tomorrow?
Tech N9ne: No!
Bean: Why not?
N9ne: Who is that?
Bean: The Oilers are going for 16 in a row! (sic)
N9ne: Oh really? I’ll probably be somewhere eating really good food.
Bean then asked N9ne, whose real name is Aaron Dontez Yates, if he was going to be watching the Super Bowl, where the rapper emphatically showed off his custom Kansas City Chiefs jersey, strewn with “6’s and 7’s,” a homage to his 2011 album. No surprise, given he’s a Kansas City native and has shown deep support for the NFL’s Chiefs, the MLB’s Kansas City Royals and the MLS’s Sporting Kansas City.
But Bean pulled a fast one, quickly bringing the conversation back to hockey.
Bean: I’m sorry Tech N9ne, I meant in the Oilers – Vegas Golden Knights game. Who are you rooting for in that contest?
Tech N9ne: Well, I would say the Oilers.
Blackburn: History!
Bean: An Oil Man. It’s good to see another Oil Man.
Then, Blackburn jumped in, asking for Tech N9ne to pick a favourite for the Stanley Cup.
Blackburn: Who do you think is going to win the Stanley Cup?
N9ne: Who do I think is going to win the Stanley Cup? Who do you think is going to win?
Blackburn: I’m interested in who you think is going to win the Stanley Cup.
N9ne: I really don’t know.
Blackburn: What about the Edmonton Oilers?
N9ne: Well, I’m going to give all the good winning energy to the Oilers.
And there you have it, folks: the Oilers are endorsed for the Stanley Cup by none other than Tech N9ne.
