Canada has announced its World Junior training camp roster, which features 16 forwards, nine defencemen, and four goaltenders. The team’s actual roster for the tournament will be announced in the coming weeks.
The lone Edmonton Oilers prospect who will be at Team Canada’s camp is Reid Schaefer, the team’s first-round pick from the 2022 NHL Draft. Through 21 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL this season, Schaefer has 15 goals and 26 points. He put together a breakout season last year for Seattle, scoring 32 goals and 58 points over 66 games.
This year’s World Juniors is scheduled to be played from December 26, 2022 through January 5, 2023 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick. Last year’s tournament in Edmonton and Red Deer wound up getting cancelled due to a COVID-19 outbreak and was later played in August, with Canada beating Finland to capture the gold medal.
