Last night, both Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl scored hat tricks for the Oilers during their 8-4 beatdown of the LA Kings and it was the first time two Oilers have accomplished the feat in over 30 years.
It goes without saying that it’s not every day that you see a pair of teammates putting up hat tricks in the same game, but that’s exactly what happened last night. Nuge kicked off the party with three goals on three shots in the first period, becoming the first Oiler to score a hatty in the opening frame since Taylor Hall did it back in March of 2013. Not to be outdone, Leon Draisaitl completed his own hat trick with a goal in each period, punctuated by the coast-to-coast showstopper that he scored in the first period.
Together, the pair became the first Oilers teammates to score hat tricks in the same game since Jari Kurri and Paul Coffey did so back on December 20th, 1985. Needless to say, it’s been a minute since Oilers fans have seen anything like what happened last night. From a league perspective, Nuge and Draisaitl are the first teammates to record hat tricks in the same game since Petr Sykora and Pascal Dupuis did it with the Penguins back in December of 2008.
Considering how trying this season has been for Oilers fans, it’s kinda nice to have a silver lining like this to enjoy. Ryan and Leon, we speak your name!
