@Edmonton Oilers and Hockey Canada legend @Ryan Smyth has been named to the 2020 IIHF Hall of Fame class.
The announcement came Tuesday morning for ‘Captain Canada,’ who played in dozens upon dozens of international games for Canada.
His nickname was fitting giving Smyth’s dedication to hockey for his country. Smyth appeared for Canada in seven straight IIHF World Championships between 1999 and 2005 — five of which were wearing the captaincy.
It wasn’t just the World Championships where he could be found as Smyth appeared in the World Juniors, two Olympic Winter Games, the World Cup of Hockey and the Spengler Cup.
Smyth is Canada’s all-time leader in games played at the Worlds with 30 and ranks 10th in scoring with 31 points.
He will officially be inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame this May during the 2020 World Championships in Switzerland.
