Despite 100-point campaigns from both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl this past season the Edmonton Oilers finished ahead of only the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference standings as they missed the playoffs yet again. That has the Oilers sitting well down the opening 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
McDavid put up 116 points and Draisaitl had 105 points this past season, while fellow forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins established career highs with 28 goals and 69 points. Still, Edmonton went just 35-38-9 on the season, finishing seventh in the Pacific Division standings and 11 points out of a playoff berth. That has the Oilers at +4000 (wager $100 to win $4000) on the 2020 Stanley Cup odds.
Edmonton’s poor record led to some front-office changes, with longtime Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland taking over that job on the Oilers from Peter Chiarelli. Ken Hitchcock also left his post as the team’s coach, with Dave Tippett taking on that position.
Holland will now be looking to make changes to the roster Chiarelli assembled over the past few seasons, a roster that includes Milan Lucic on the books for $6 million per year through 2023. Alex Chiasson, who surprised with 22 goals last season, is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, while Jesse Puljujarvi will be a restricted free agent this summer and could be in store for a change of scenery after turning in a nine-point season.
The Oilers are also locked in to goaltender Mikko Koskinen, who Chiarelli signed to a three-year, $4.5 million contract during the season. Koskinen put up a .906 save percentage.
While Edmonton sits near the bottom of the 2020 Stanley Cup betting lines, the Tampa Bay Lightning are atop those early futures at +800, ahead of the Boston Bruins and Vegas Golden Knights at +900, and the Toronto Maple Leafs at +1000. The St. Louis Blues, coming off their first Stanley Cup championship, are listed at +1200 on those NHL odds at sportsbooks.
The Anaheim Ducks (+6600) and Detroit Red Wings (+6600) along with the Ottawa Senators (+10000) sit as the longshots on the 2020 Stanley Cup odds heading into the summer.
