The Edmonton Oilers have an extended six-day layoff this week after seeing their scheduled Friday night date with the Vancouver Canucks get postponed. And this break could not have come at a better time. The Oilers have struggled to produce consistent results of late and have paid the price at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, where they have dropped to a +2000 wager on the updated Stanley Cup odds.
The Oilers emerged as legitimate contenders in the race for top spot in the North Division standings while winning 18 of 25 contests during a steady two-month run in February and March. However, the team has struggled to generate offense in eight contests since then, averaging just 2.25 goals per game while falling to defeat in four of their past eight outings.
Now lagging eight points back of first-place Toronto in the divisional standings entering the final quarter of the regular season, the Oilers are looking increasingly destined for a tough first-round playoff matchup with either the high-powered Maple Leafs or the surging Winnipeg Jets.
The Maple Leafs continue to lead all Canadian NHL clubs by a wide margin on the Stanley Cup odds at online sports betting sites. Toronto remains among the favorites as a +700 wager despite facing offensive woes of their own during the team’s current three-game slide. Injuries have emerged as a huge factor in Toronto. Goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Jack Campbell have both been battling injury, and were joined in the clinic this week by Auston Matthews (wrist).
Conversely, the Jets appear to have found their groove during a 5-1-1 run that has pulled them to within three points of Toronto in the division. Buoyed by a favorable schedule that has them playing nine of their final 12 games on home ice, the Jets have vaulted to a +2200 Stanley Cup wager. However, Winnipeg still has plenty of work to do to overcome a woeful playoff track record that has featured early postseason exits in each of the past two years.
The Montreal Canadiens remain deadlocked with Winnipeg at +2200 on those NHL odds despite losing 11 of their past 16 contests. The Canadiens now sit just four points up on the surging Calgary Flames, who are a distant +15000 wager to win the Stanley Cup this season despite returning to the playoff hunt with three straight wins.
Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche have climbed to the top of the NHL standings during a 17-1-2 run, and have also set themselves apart as +350 favorites on the Stanley Cup odds. The defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning have maintained their position as +600 second favorites despite losing five of their past 10 games. The Vegas Golden Knights have dominated while winning five of six, and round out the front of that pack with +800 odds.
