This week in NHL history saw some big names get drafted along with iconic trades and hirings. Here’s a look at what happened the week of June 22-28 in hockey history.

CanucksArmy

June 26, 1999: The Canucks drafted Daniel Sedin at 2nd overall and Henrik Sedin at 3rd overall after a series of trades made by Brian Burke to land the 2nd and 3rd pick at the 1999 NHL Draft.
June 23, 2006: In part of a five-player trade, the Canucks acquired Roberto Luongo from the Panthers in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi.
June 22, 1998: Brian Burke is hired by the Canucks as GM, a position he would hold for six years.

Flamesnation

June 24, 1980: The Atlanta Flames officially relocate to Calgary, making them the 7th Canadian NHL team at the time.

June 26, 2017: Yeah, yeah, I know this is a throwback to a few days ago, but it’s a pretty big deal. Teemu Selanne was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame (watch the video below to see him getting the news from Lanny McDonald). The Finnish Flash completed his NHL career with 1,457 points in 1,451 games played including a record-breaking rookie season in which he scored 132 points (76G and 56A).
June 22, 1979: The Jets join the NHL from the WHA along with the Whalers, Nordiques and Oilers.

June 28, 1994: The Leafs make a blockbuster trade at the Draft when they send Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre, Landon Wilson and their 12th overall pick to the Quebec Nordiques for Garth Butcher, Todd Warriner, Mats Sundin and the 16th overall pick.
June 26, 1998: Pat Quinn was hired as the Leafs’ head coach. He would go on to coach the team from 1998 through to 2006 achieving 300 wins, which put him at second most in franchise history. He also served as GM from 1999-2003.

June 28 2007: In his first year of eligibility, Mark Messier was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
June 27, 2014: The Oilers drafted Leon Draisaitl 3rd overall at the 2014 NHL Draft.
June 26, 2015: The Oilers drafted Connor McDavid 1st overall at the 2015 NHL Draft… you know the rest!
June 23, 1999: Normally players have to wait at least three years after retirement before they’re eligible to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, but this rule was waived for Gretzky when only two months after he announced his retirement he was selected as part of the class of 1999.
June 22, 1979: The Oilers join the NHL from the WHA along with the Whalers, Nordiques and Jets.

Wingsnation

June 22, 1982: The late Mike Ilitch purchased the Red Wings from Bruce Norris. Under his ownership, the Red Wings won four Stanley Cup Championships between 1997 and 2008.
