It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon in Sherwood Park as over a hundred people descended upon Famous Donair for a free donair.
The event was put on by us and Sherwood Ford who partnered to give away 100 free socially distanced donairs. This, of course, after weeks upon weeks of an intense bracket challenge that saw some upsets, some tears, and Jay fighting hard for Mom’s Donair to win.
What started as a silly idea a few months ago has turned into a great community initiative and event that saw fans of the Nation pouring to local donair shops.
Famous Donair, our eventual champion, got their start in the Nation’s Small Town Region as a four seed going up against Rob’s Donair, another Sherwood Park shop.
From there, they cruised into a second-round matchup with Fort Saskatchewan’s City Donair before beating Westlock’s Ramzi’s Burger & Pizza in round three.
Famous’ biggest matchup, however, came in the fourth round against Mom’s Donair. An Edmonton staple and favourite donair shop of The Squire’s, it was the largest matchup Famous had faced.
And one they came out of on top.
Finally, in the championship round they were squared up with Beaumont’s Mainia’s. The two out of town shops went head to head in a tight race, but the fans of Famous come out to vote.
And such, we wanted to show Famous some love for their big win. Jay, Jarrod and I held a pop-up Nation Gear shop as our friends at Sherwood Ford The Giant came out with a new Ford Raptor and some free coffee cards.
Nick and his team at Famous whipped up 100 free donairs for anyone who wanted one, and fun was had by all.
I’ve got some photos from yesterday’s event that I’ll share below, but I have to say it was a tremendous day to see the smiling faces of Nick and fans of the Nation. You all always come through and support local and yesterday was no different.
We’re already in the process of getting next years bracket set up, so be ready to Support Your Local Donair Shop!
