The Oilers lend Joakim Nygard to Farjestad of the Swedish Hockey League to start the 2020-21 season

Joakim Nygard will start the 2020-21 season playing in the Swedish Hockey League.

As we’re seeing with a handful of players around the league, the Oilers have lent Nygard to Farjestad of the Swedish Hockey League.

While the NHL isn’t going to be able to begin its 2020-21 season until December at the very earliest, the SHL and other European leagues are starting to get rolling. European teams are currently playing exhibition games and they’re scheduled to begin their regular seasons in September.

Prospects Philip Broberg and Raphael Lavoie will likely play the entirety of the 2020-21 season in Sweden, but, in Nygard’s case, he’s simply going to get some action in before he can return to the Oilers.

Nygard didn’t suit up for the Oilers in the playoffs and, due to injury, he hasn’t played in a game since late-January. Playing for a few months in Sweden will provide him with an opportunity to get back up to speed before the NHL season begins.
