The Oilers Sign Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson

The Edmonton Oilers have signed backup goalie, Jonas Gustavsson, to a one-year contract worth $800K.
When Laurent Brossoit was recalled after the trade dealine he struggled to find his footing as Cam Talbot’s backup. I don’t think that means that Brossoit won’t be an NHL goaltender, but I do think that it means he’s not quite ready yet. Giving Brossoit another year to marinate in the minors, and play big minutes, will likely be beneficial for him long term. Signing Gustavsson to a one-year deal gives the Oilers a little bit of insurance, and buys them the time that Brossoit may need to get up to speed at the NHL level.
TSN breaks Gustavsson down like this:
AssetsNicknamed ‘The Monster’, he has a huge frame that, combined with his butterfly style, really fills up most of the net. Has great flexibility and athleticism for a big guy.
FlawsIs significantly injury-prone. Will sometimes go down in the butterfly too quickly. Also needs work on limiting rebounds. Must also improve his stamina. Can look a bit nervous at times.
Career potentialMammoth, quality backup goaltender, when healthy.

WHAT THEY SAID

From Causeway Crowd
Gustavsson has done reasonably well as a member of the Boston Bruins this season. He has a 11-7-1 record (1 shutout). He has a respectable 2.63 goals against and a .911 save percentage. Gustavsson was the dark horse in the running for the number two job at training camp, but he beat out all of the other candidates to become Tuuka Rask’s backup.
Jonas Gustavsson played adequately this season (11-9-1, 2.72 goals-against, .908 save percentage). Gustavsson was sidelined at times due to an irregular heartbeat and like Rask had some very rough games, giving up goals they would normally stop.
