The time that Shattenkirk was almost an Oiler

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Jeremy Rutherford, the Oilers and Blues had a trade in place to trade Taylor Hall for Kevin Shattenkirk last June.
Despite the deal being in place, Shattenkirk vetoed the move.
He also turned down a potential deal to Edmonton last June that would have yielded forward Taylor Hall, according to league sources. Hall was eventually dealt to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Adam Larsson.
Shattenkirk does not have a no-trade clause in his four-year, $17 million contract ($4.25 million AAV) that is set to expire on June 30. But essentially he does have one because for the Blues to find a trade partner willing to give them the return they’re seeking, he would have to agree to the long-term extension with the other club before a deal could be consummated.Under those circumstances, the Blues would perhaps be able to land an established NHL player. In addition to Hall, when he was with the Oilers, they’ve been linked to Lightning players such as Jonathan Drouin and Tyler Johnson. But as a rental, Shattenkirk’s worth on the trade market has been speculated as a first-round pick, a top prospect and perhaps lesser-tier NHL player.
Shattenkirk has been linked to the Oilers for some time. Shattenkirk is clearly a player that the Oilers could use.
He is a right-shot, 20 minute powerplay quarterback with an ability to produce offensively – how could the Oilers not have interest in a player of his calibre?
The news that Shattenkirk was uninterested in signing a potential extension with Edmonton is one that doesn’t come as a surprise. Many feel that he will end up with an Eastern Conference team.
Rutherford’s article also notes that Lighting and Blues had a deal in place approximately six weeks ago to send the defenceman to Tampa Bay. TSN’s Bob McKenzie noted that there was a deal in place to give him a seven-year, $42 million deal with an AAV of $6 million.
In January, TSN’s insiders noted that Shattenkirk could be a player that could be available come the NHL’s Trade Deadline next Wednesday and that Edmonton is a team that could be a fit. TSN’s Frank Seravalli felt that he could be in for a deal that sits in the range of $50 million over seven years.
Rutherford speculates that Shattenkirk will likely be a rental player and that his worth has been speculated “as a first-round pick, a top prospect and perhaps a lesser-tier NHL player.”
