THE TRADE DEADLINE LIVE BLOG

The yard sale is open and we’re ready for business! For one day only, everything must go! We have blowout prices, and discount deals, for any team that is looking to add an underperforming piece at the trade deadline. This will be the sale of the century and everything must go! Or maybe (read: probably) it’s going to be a boring day. We’ll see.
With most of Chiarelli’s deadline to-do list checked off on Saturday when he traded Purcell and Schultz that leaves me to believe that the Oilers won’t be doing much apart from a minor deal here or there. Chiarelli hinted that there may be a defenseman or two out there that he may like to “test drive” so I guess we’ll have to look out for that, but I’d bet Wanye’s money that there won’t be much more than that. If you’re expecting a guy like Taylor Hall to get moved today you’re likely in for disappointment.
I am interested in finding out whether or not Chiarelli can get anything for guys like Lauri Korpikoski. They’re allowed to retain salary on one more deal so you never know. Will a playoff bound team offer the Oilers enough to give up Matt Hendricks? I doubt they want to trade him, the guy is a war machine, but I can also see how he would be a valuable add to a team looking for playoff pieces. Is today the day that Nail Yakupov gets moved? Will Chiarelli be able to move Eric Gryba even though he hasn’t played, or does he want to re-sign him?
While there are definitely bigger moves that Peter Chiarelli can make you’d have to think that most of the heavy lifting will get done in the summer. According to his interview with Terry Jones, Chiarelli hasn’t yet decided whether or not he’s going to move a core piece let alone who that piece will be. I’m not sure I really believe him necessarily, but that’s a story for another day. Frankly, I doubt the Oilers will be busy at all and worry about how off the rails this live blog is going to go. Coffee breaks are cool to write about, right? Totally.

THE TRADES

  • Edmonton traded the rights to Philip Larsen to the Vancouver Canucks for a conditional 5th round pick in 2017. The 5th round pick could turn into a 4th rounder if Larsen hits unspecified performances markers. (February 24th)
  • Backup goaltender Anders Nilsson was traded to the St. Louis Blues for minor league goalie Niklas Lundstrom and a 5th round pick. (February 27th)
  • Teddy Purcell was traded to the Florida Panthers for a third round pick in 2016. This trade now gives the Oilers five picks in the top three rounds. (February 27th)
  • Justin Schultz was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 3rd round pick in 2016. With five picks in the first three rounds you know Chiarelli is going to be wheeling and dealing on draft day. (February 27th)
  • Two-year contract extension for defenseman Brandon Davidson. According to Bob Stauffer, Davidson’s new deal will pay him $1.425 million per year for two years. Steal of a deal. I only wish it was longer.
  • Two-year (one way) extension for goaltender Laurent Brossoit. You knew this one would get done. Looks like a $750k cap hit for Brossoit.
  • The Oilers have claimed Adam Pardy and Adam Cracknell off of waivers from Winnipeg and Vancouver respectively. Both players are UFAs at the end of the year and are likely warm bodies until the summer.
  • The Oilers acquire Pat Maroon from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a pick and a prospect. Details coming…

THE NATION TRADE BOARD

Is anything going to happen today? I’m probably going to be sitting here just staring at Twitter/TV won’t I? Not that I’m complaining, watching the trade deadline for a living is awesome but that doesn’t mean I can’t get board. I need Chiarelli to make something happen if for no other reason than my amusement.
TRADE CANDIDATES:
  • Eric Gryba – expiring contract, but could also be re-signed as a third pairing option.
  • Nail Yakupov – According to Twitter a few teams are interest in Yakupov. Personally, I don’t see the need to trade him now, especially since the Oilers would be selling low. Why not put him with McDavid for a while to bump up the value for the summer?
  • Lauri Korpikoski – PLEEEEEEASE? The Oilers can retain salary on one more contract and this one legitimately makes sense. He can help, honest.*
  • Nikita Nikitin – As much as we’d all love for the Oilers to get anything at all for Nikitin I just doubt it will happen. I mea, who the hell would “need” him? Then again Kimmo Timonen was traded last year and he could barely skate.
  • Mark Letestu – I’ve been seeing his name around Twitter lately as a guy that some fans would like to see moved. I don’t really get it apart from the fact that he’s overpaid by a touch. Ain’t my money.
  • Anton Lander – He scored last night and now he may never score another goal in his life, but there are things to like about his game. He is excellent in the faceoff circle, is a solid penalty killer, and plays a responsible defensive game. He’s the best stay at home defenseman that the Oilers have playing forward.
  • Matt Hendricks – The guy took a clapper to the figs and came back to play. While most of us would have a month off work, Matt Hendricks slapped on a new nut locker and got back in the game. You tell me a team that couldn’t use that? I bet the Oilers want to keep him though.
  • Mark Fayne – Maybe? Anybody? Probably not, right? Right.
  • Rob Klinkhammer – Pending UFA. Maybe someone will need depth for their bottom 6?
  • Other ghosts from the past – If Chiarelli can trade the rights to Philip Larsen then who knows where this guy will stop. Can we move on from the rights to Alexei Mihknov? What’s Danill Zarkov doing these days? Clear him out. I’m sure there are more empties that can be cashed in, Chiarelli just has to find them.

RUMOUR HAS IT…

I’ll be filling this section with random rumours from the MSM and hilarious tweets from Twitter “insiders” throughout the day. Take these with a grain of salt unless it comes from one of the usual suspects.

LIVE UPDATES FROM NATION HQ

  • 7:15am – It’s too early. I didn’t become a professional journalist mediocre blogger to have to wake up this early. Even funnier is that TSN’s deadline coverage has already been happening for over an hour
  • 7:25am – With Pouliot getting hurt you’d have to think that pulls Yak off the trade board, right? No reason to not give him time in the top 6 with this injury. We shall see.
  • 7:30am – Looks like Brandon Davidson will be signing a new contract here shortly. Good. Nailed it. Pay the man.
  • 7:58am – TSN reporter panel are talking about how Brent Seabrook many not be what he used to be. Good thing he signed that mammoth extension! BTW if he’s not that good then what do the Oilers have?
  • 8:10am – RE-SIGNED! The man they call LB at a $750,000 cap hit.
  • 9:02am – The Oilers have assigned JJ Khaira and Jordan Oesterle to the AHL Condors. I assume this is just a paper transaction to make them eligible for the AHL playoffs, but I’ve been wrong before. We wait.
  • 9:12am – The Oilers haven’t assigned LB yet which they would need to for AHL playoff purposes. I can’t help but wonder if the Oilers try to put in a claim on a guy like Stalock?
  • 9:25am – Just crushed breakfast down here at Nation HQ. Eggs. Ham. Toast. Nailed it. My breakfast Corsi is off the charts right now. Go me!
  • 9:43am – I always love when the Oilers segments come up on deadline day. They suck. We get it.
  • 9:50am – Eric Staal is speaking at the podium in New York right now. He refuses to play on team that doesn’t have a Staal on it. Too bad Jordan signed that long term contract in Carolina, huh?
  • 10:03am – Four hours into the trade deadline coverage has started getting weird. Pray for the panel, people.
  • 10:10am – The Oilers have done an excellent job upping their Adam quota by picking up Cracknell and Pardy off waivers. Adam Corsi game is dialed in. I can’t wait to release the Cracknell!
  • 10:39am – Starting to get board now. I don’t even care if the Oilers make I trade I just want SOMEONE to make a trade.
  • 10:45am – Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  • 11:00am – Chris the Intern doesn’t like the lack of trades but he does like the TSN trade centre coverage. The bits make him laugh. Now you’re updated on what Chris has been up to.
  • 11:10am – Looks like the Coyotes have just traded Mikkel Boedker to the Colorado Avalanche. Waiting on the return… AT LEAST SOMEONE GOT TRADED!
  • 11:40am – Kriss Russell goes to Dallas. Return not confirmed yet. Colorado acquired Eric Gelinas from From New Jersey for a 3rd round pick.
  • 11:49am – Dammit! Calgary got a solid return for Russell (Jokipakka, Pollock, and a 2nd round pick). Compare that to what MacT got for Petry and it is embarrassing.
  • 11:55am – All the defenseman are going… SOMEONE HAS TO TAKE NIKITIN, RIGHT?!
  • 12:22pm – How the hell did Brandon Pirri go for a 6th round pick? Rishaug tweeted about the possibility of a 2nd rounder for him this morning. Dale Tallon gone cray cray.
  • 12:53pm – The Oilers just assigned Darnell Nurse and Laurent Brossoit to the AHL. Paper transaction to make sure they’re eligible for the playoffs. Interesting that Draisaitl was not.
  • 1:01pm – The deadline has passed and the Oilers haven’t done anything. We’ll see if anything comes in late but it seems unlikely.
  • 1:26pm – At least they signed Davidson and Brossoit? That’s cool, right! Was hoping for more dead weight to be shipped out but I guess it was not meant to be.
  • 2:40pm – Late trade but the Oilers acquire Pat Maroon from the Ducks for a pick and prospect. Details coming…

THE TRADE SCENARIO/ARMCHAIR GM WINNER

A few weeks back, I launched a contest looking for the best most plausible trade scenarios you guys could come up with. From there I tried to find the 10 best trade ideas that I could and put them into my fancy voting machine to see who you guys thought had the best idea.
In the end, the winner of the contest predicted that we would actually get a warm body back for Schultz when it reality the former Norris candidate is now a bean in Chiarelli’s pocket. Not far off though. I will be contacting the winner to alert him of his glory and prize stash for the ages, and I’m sure an NHL team will offer him a job soon after.
Big thank you to everyone that entered the contest, we’ll probably try having another one of these for draft/free agency.
