It’s a very good day in Edmonton. The sky is grey, the temperature is cooling down, and the hockey season is one more day closer with players reporting to development camp yesterday for their first skates. No, this isn’t a post to commemorate the moment we sent two draft picks to New York for future Vegas Golden Knight Griffin Reinhart.
This is a moment to look back fondly on the day the Edmonton Oilers and Peter Chiarelli walked up to that stage in Florida and announced…
“The Edmonton Oilers would like to select with our first pick, from the Erie Otters, Connor McDavid”
From where I blog, it was as if the entire Alberta-based Nation had assembled in what was our largest party to date at the Pint Downtown. Myself in Halifax at the time, as with many other Nation fans from around the world were there in spirit as those sixteen words rolled off ol’ Pistol Pete’s tongue and elation ensued. Here’s a look back at that party:

We all know the amazing things Connor has gone on to do in his short career thus far.
  • Two-time Ted Lindsay award winner
  • Two-time Art Ross trophy winner
  • 2017 Hart Trophy winner
  • Finished third in Calder trophy ballots after spotting the 24-year-old winner 35 games
And those personal achievements are just the tip of the iceberg for the leadership he has shown on an Oilers team that has not supported him for the bulk of his time in Edmonton so far. A trend that will hopefully change in the upcoming season and beyond.
I find this anniversary along with the lottery draft Connorversary as one of those moments in Oilers fandom that we all share a common bond.
I can remember where I was when the fateful numbers 5, 14. 6, and 1 came up and we were awarded the first overall pick in the 2015 draft; you can be sure that most Oilers fans can remember where they were when that lottery ticket was cashed in for the generational talent, Connor McDavid.
