Welcome back to this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday!
On this day in 1991, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Quebec Nordiques 7-6 in an overtime thriller that saw Edmonton spoil a five-point, hat-trick night from Joe Sakic.
“That’s the best performance I’ve seen an individual have against us this season,” raved Oiler coach John Muckler, after Sakic’s five points gave him 102.
“I knew he was a good player, but we don’t see him that often where we are. He’s a superstar. He was dangerous every time he was on the ice and believe me… he was on the ice a alot. He had us scrambling and can he shoot.”
Messier had the last shot, however, and he sent the 15,194 fans scramling for the exits.
“I knew how much time was left on the clock and just tried to get it on the net. I was lucky, the puck was bouncing,” said Messier, as the Oilers won two in a row for the first time since Feb. 1 (Chicago) and Feb. 3 (Buffalo).
Edmonton had jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first in thanks to goals from Adam Graves, Craig Simpson, Dave Brown and Craig Muni, but three-second period goals from the Nordiques — two of which were from Sakic — had the game tied at 5.
In the third, Jeff Beukeboom scored for the Oilers and Sakic completed his hat-trick sending the game to the extra frame. There, Moose got the Oilers the aforementioned win.
More the Oilers, Messier and Simpson led the way each with one goal, two-assist performances, which Glenn Anderson scored a goal and an assist, and Charlie Huddy notched two apples. Seven other Oilers notched points in the game.
