Throwback Thursday: This week in 1988, Jimmy Carson scores first hat-trick with Edmonton Oilers

This week in 1988 (Dec. 4), Jimmy Carson notched his first hat-trick with the Edmonton Oilers.

Acquired in the Wayne Gretzky blockbuster, Carson was only 20 years old but he had already made his impact felt in the NHL scoring 92 goals and 186 points in 160 games.

And when he came to Edmonton, he was just as good. While he only stuck around for a full season in 1988-89 and four games in 89-88, Carson totalled 50 goals and 103 points in 84 games.

He only scored one hat-trick in Edmonton and it was in a game against the New York Rangers. While Edmonton won the game 10-6 as literally no defence occurred, Carson potted two goals in the first period and his third in the second frame.

Carson’s time came to an end when the Oilers traded him to the Detroit Red Wings with Kevin McLelland on Nov. 2, 1989 for Petr Klima, Joe Murphy, Adam Graves, and Jeff Sharples.
