Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 2018 (Nov. 16), the Edmonton Oilers traded Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers for Ryan Spooner.
The trade marked a significant downgrade only a year and a bit after the Oilers had traded Jordan Eberle for Strome.
While Strome impressed in his first full season in Edmonton scoring 13 goals and 34 points in 82 games and a third-liner, he fell flat out of the gate to start the 2018-19 season.
In 18 games, he scored only one goal and as many assists and while the points weren’t there, Strome was posting some solid underlying numbers that suggested there was much more to his game.
But, in true Peter Chiarelli fashion, he panicked and moved Strome for a lesser Spooner. Much like it could be expected, Strome has flourished with the Rangers scoring 92 points in 133 games since the trade.
Spooner, meanwhile, only played in 25 games for the Oilers scoring two goals and one assist. He spent 11 games in Vancouver in 2018-19 after the Oilers shipped him there for Sam Gagner, but has been out of the NHL since.
