Two Years Ago Today: The Oilers win a playoff series

5 years ago It’s the summer and the Oilers are off in beautiful destinations soaking up the rays. Let us take up some of the company time to revel in that one time in the last decade that we won a playoff series.
The series opened up with the Oilers hosting a game one for the first time since the 1991 series against the Minnesota North Stars in the Campbell Conference Finals. The crowd was pumped up for that night and the solidification of Rob Clark as the new anthem singer sealed that.
After jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first the rowdy fans were sadly failed by the team, losing 3-2 in overtime.

The home faithful would not be disappointed in game two as Zack Kassian would take the step into the spotlight with the first goal and Connor would expose Martin Jones five-hole before that was a thing (see this year’s playoffs for reference). Cam Talbot arrived as well with this 16 save shutout for his both his first playoff win and playoff shutout.

The shutout streak would continue for Talbot through the entirety of Game three, the Oilers only needing a goal from Zack Kassian through that all too familiar five-hole of Martin Jones.

Game four happened but I don’t think there is any video of it anywhere. It’s like game seven of the 2006 finals, just didn’t get recorded. Nothing to see here.

Alright, it did happen the Sharks won 7-0 but this is a blog for the good vibes. If you’re truly into reliving the bad times… here.
As is usually the case after getting taken to the woodshed in the playoffs, the Oilers had another playoff hero emerge from existing to legend (I may be getting a little romantic watching these highlights) with David Desharnais hitting his overtime winner sealing the 3-2 series lead for the Oilers.

That brings us to this day in history, two short years ago. The Oilers came out firing and it felt like they didn’t want to have to come home until round two came around. Other than a heart-stopping backhander off the crossbar and post with the game in the balance and the Sharks on the pp, the Oilers shut down the Sharks in sound fashion, winning the series 4-2.

Sure the Oilers would go onto lose the series 4-3 against the refs Ducks but it’s nice to look back on the success we once shared and will again soon?
