Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

For the fourth year in a row, the staff at Nation HQ will be closing our laptops and making their way to Churchill Square to Walk a Mile in her shoes. No, we’re not walking around Churchill Square in stilettos because it makes us feel pretty (it does), we’re circling the square to raise money to help the victims of family violence. It’s a great cause, and we’re happy to be involved again. Are you man enough to join us?
I ask again… Are you man enough to join team OilersNation and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes with us? We need people to join our team, strap on some heels, feel a little bit pretty, and help our team to raise money for this great cause. If you think you’re up for the challenge, a few laughs, and think you’ve got what it takes to parade yourself around in heels we want you on our team. Make no mistake, circling Churchill Square in heels is never easy, but we’re going to round up a squad and get to work anyway.

WHAT IS WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES?

The Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event is looking to raise $160,000 to support YWCA violence prevention and recovery programs, including our Counselling Centre and GirlSpace programs. Events like the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes are a key part of raising funds and bringing awareness to this issue, and we need your help to both raise funds and awareness.
All the money raised goes directly to the YWCA, and helps them keep women and children safe from domestic abuse. In turn, the money raised will be used by the YWCA to:
  • Subsidize counselling services for families in need and survivors of domestic abuse
  • Sponsor prevention programs such as the GirlSpace & the Power of Being a Girl Conference
  • Provide support to women’s shelters and recovery retreats
  • Increase partnerships will other agencies aimed at preventing violence in the home
Hopefully no one reading this will ever be involved in any type of violence, but, unfortunately, many families are crippled by it.  It goes without saying that we think it’s important to raise awareness for such a worthy cause, and we’re asking you to help us spread the word. This will be my third year doing the Walk a Mile challenge, and I urge you to join us and get involved if you can.

JOIN TEAM OILERSNATION

As always, the event will be happening at Sir Winston Churchill Square on September 21st, and we’re looking for a few fine Nation readers like you to join our team. The goal is obvious, we want to raise as much money as possible and that means we need people that will be able to raise at least $150 towards the cause. As a bonus, anyone that joins team OilersNation will also get a free Nation tee just for playing along.
If you want to join our team you can click here and follow the instructions. Once you’ve registered to walk, you will be asked if you want to continue as an individual or to join a team. Click the ‘team’ option and enter OilersNation in the search box (our team page is here).  After you’ve joined our crew, you will be given a link to pass along to family and friends that brings them to your donation page.
If you can’t make it, and still want to get involved, you can donate money directly to the cause or by sponsor a walker like me! If all this sounds good but you still need another reason to donate, every donation over $20 gets a tax receipt to help you when tax man comes calling. You really can’t lose by donating!  So join our team, sponsor a walker with a few shekels, or even stop by Churchill Square and cheer us on as we do our best not to fall down.
