In our neverending quest to find some decent sports coverage of the Oilers, we thought we would give a read to edmontonoilers.com and see their take on the game. If this is what passes for sports journalism in Oil Country, we weep for the children. We really do.
We thought we would do a head to head comparison of the BS on the Oilers website versus what actually occurred and let you judge for yourselves. Keep in mind this is the website that reported the Ryan Smyth trade as “Oilers acquire Robert Nilsson.” We wish we were kidding. Anyway here goes:
Reality
The Oilers lost 4-3 to Tampa Bay, the last place team in the Eastern Conference. It was a game they absolutely had to win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Edmonton Oilers turned a 4-1 deficit into 4-3 in the third period but didn’t quite come all the way back in losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum on Tuesday night.

The Oilers surrendered a 3-0 lead during the second period, and the they were unable to get anything going until Cogliano scored at 10:08 of the second. Despite the fact the Lightning are LAST in the East (have we mentioned this fact?) they were able to manhandle the Oilers easily.

Edmonton’s defenders were able to curb the Lightning offence through most of the period. Tampa Bay didn’t have a shot on goal during a two-minute power play past the midway point of the first and in fact did not manage a shot in the latter half of the opening period.

Roloson looked absolutely brutal on the first Tampa Goal. Out of position, out of the play and unable to recover.

38 seconds into the second period, Tampa Bay scored to take the lead. Jan Hlavac had Roloson at his mercy but couldn’t find an opening to shoot the puck past the Oilers netminder. Instead, he fed the puck back to Martin St. Louis in the high slot who spotted Brad Richards to the right side of the net. Roloson couldn’t get across in time as Richards put the puck into the open cage.

It’s nice to know that Hlavac couldn’t find an opening on Roloson, despite the fact he had him “at his mercy.” Too bad the play resulted in a goal.
We would imagine that everyone is pretty pissed today given the game last night. For those of you keeping score, the Oil are 1-2 on this road trip through the worst division in the NHL.
