The Edmonton Oilers officially opened up Rogers Place today for small groups of six or less to start voluntary training as Phase 2 of the NHL’s return to play plan kicked off today.

With today’s announcement, Oilers players that are in the city will now have the option to work out at Rogers Place, while also being told that they can continue training wherever they’re currently located. Late last week, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins told Reid Wilkins that while he has been back on the ice and working out as normal, he’ll wait and see what the rest of his teammates are doing before making his way back to Edmonton:

On Thursday, the league announced that its teams are now able to reopen their facilities for players to utilize as hopes continue that hockey will be able to return later on in the summer. At this stage, we still don’t know whether or not that will happen, but the reopening of team facilities can certainly be described as a small step in the right direction. So how many guys will take advantage of the opportunity? We’ll have to wait and see, but as of this moment, off-ice and on-ice sessions will reman closed to the public and media.
