Lucky 13 in the record book

“Andrew Cogliano, ovvvvvertiiiiiiiime WINNER.”

Kevin Quinn of Sportsnet squealed like he’s never squealed before when Edmonton Oilers rookie Andrew Cogliano pounded the puck behind Manny Legace to beat the St. Louis Blues 4–3 at Rexall Place last night.
And why not?

Cogliano’s overtime winner was his third straight, establishing an NHL record. Wayne Gretzky never did it. Neither did Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Mark Messier, Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard. Pick a name. Pick an era. It’s never been done.

Call the Hall. Save the puck. Cogliano stands alone.

“I don’t know what to say. I’m kind of in shock,” Cogliano said of his record-setting goal. “It’s fun for myself, it’s pretty cool for a young guy to do this. I didn’t plan on this at the beginning of the year, that’s for sure.”

Didn’t plan this at the beginning of the year? I guess not. Cogliano was a long shot to make the team out of training camp after opting to leave the University of Michigan to turn pro.

The 20-year-old speedster leads the Oilers with five game-winning goals. He’s scored seven goals in the last eight games and has 16 on the season. Now, he’s in the record book.

“I’m pretty lucky right now scoring goals like this,” Cogliano said.

Luck has nothing to do with it, kid.

"I didn’t plan on this at the beginning of the year, that’s for sure.” – Andrew Cogliano talking about scoring 3 straight OT winners and setting an NHL record.

    – Thats like Britney Spears manager taking a look at the last 18 months of her life and saying "I didn’t plan on this at the beginning of the year, that’s for sure.”

    – Thats like Marian Jones' track coach waiting for her on Monday at the gym for a training session and saying "I didn’t plan on this at the beginning of the year, that’s for sure.”

    – Thats like Hulk Hogan waiting at the restaurant for his wife for their anniversary dinner and saying "I didn’t plan on this at the beginning of the year, that’s for sure.”

    Yeah Cogliano, no kidding.

They must have showed the highlight 20 times from the end of the game to the mid-point of the Sportsnet Connected show after the game finished. It was a great one.

    Hi Robin!

    Great article!
Do you have any stats on the progression of the Oilers PP of late? I remember we were way at the bottom of the league at the start of the year and we're 21st rigth now! Thanks a lot!
