hunt ferguson 1415

While the power play wilts in Edmonton, Brad Hunt is on fire in Oklahoma territory. The undersized defender ripped through the AHL this week in breathtaking fashion, scoring eight points in just four games. It was a week of strong performances by defensemen across the prospect list, with Darnell Nurse and Joey Laleggia having impact weeks. Let’s have a look.

  • Tyler Pitlick and Curtis Hamilton both enjoyed good weeks.
  • Kale Kessy is going to force an audition if he keeps playing this well.

          1. William Lagesson, Dubuque 15GP, 1-10-11 (3GP, 0-3-3 this week)

          1. Holy hell, Joey Laleggia. That was a major week!
          2. William Lagesson also enjoyed a strong week, and it’s worth nothing the large number of defensemen who are trending well this year in all levels (save the NHL level).

          1. Roman Horak, Vityaz Podolsk (KHL) 29GP, 15-6-21 (3GP, 2-0-2 this week)

          4. Daniil Zharkov Torpedo (VHL) 8GP, 1-1-2 (did not play this week)

          • Horak is having a strong season, wonder if we’ll see him again.
          • Slepyshev has all-world talent but isn’t delivering. What’s more he’s not getting big minutes in the KHL.
          • Tyrvainen had a good week.

Q1: At 26, is Brad Hunt too old to improve his foot speed to help his defensive game? (I’m pretty sure I know the answer).

Q2: Is Brad Hunt actually worse than Jultz on the defensive side of the puck? (My memories from watching Hunt play NHL games earlier this season tells me that somehow this is still possible though my memories from watching the Jultzing over the last few games tells me that this is impossible)

              • bradleypi

When are people gonna realize that the problem in Edmonton isn’t the players?!?! “Brad hunt can’t play defense, Justin Schultz can’t play defense, nikitin can’t play defense, ference can’t play defense, belov couldn’t play defense, potter couldn’t play defense “. This is all I read on this sight!! But are we seeing a trend here??? Ever since Eakins took this team over, it’s been a revolving door of goaltenders and dmen….. “why isn’t marincin getting ice time!?!?!”… is another one I keep reading…well he played last night and surprise, surprise, another loss…. not surprised at all that hunt is putting up points in okc… he’s probably the most poised dman in the entire oilers system… we will not see improvement on this team until Eakins is shown the door, and I for one can’t wait for that day to happen!!

                • WTF

Sorry, but you cannot name any coach ever who could make the likes of Hunt, Schultz, Nikitin et al a solid d-core in today’s NHL. Coaching has been bad, yes, but the management that threw this mess together is equally to blame. Honestly, look at the names you just listed; 3 of those guys aren’t in the NHL for a reason, and the other 3 are only in the NHL right now because Oilers.

                  • bradleypi

It’s no surprise that 3 of those guys are out of the league after Eakins got his hands on them… and if the other 3 weren’t on the oil, I’m pretty sure they’d be employed by another club for sure…. I completely agree that mact and klowe haven’t made many good moves, but canning Eakins would be a step in the right direction imo… and remember devan dubnyk? The guy who everyone in Edmonton said was a bum and was washed up? Seems to be doing pretty well this year with a good coach and in an actual hockey system…. once he got free of Eakins he looks good, which can’t be said for the tandem in the pipes in oil country… I feel sorry for them

                    • Kadugan

Your example is flawed, Dubnyk went from the best D in front of him being Petry and Marincin to a team that can boast the likes of OEL and Yandle, nevermind Arizona’s wingers tend to be heavier on the back check than the smurfs we had when he was here. Again, that’s largely on the crappy management of this team.

                • Kadugan

Couldn’t put any blame on the people who actually have to play the game. Has to be the fault of the carousel of coaches whom have come gone come back in different roles and get handed a herd of smurfs and castoffs from more successful franchises. It’s hockey it’s a no brainer that 1 stud (hall) 1 developing stud (nuge) 1 could be a stud if he applies himself (yak) a gifted clutch guy (ebs) cast off backup goalies and NO DEFENCE is all any coach should need to field a Stanley cup contender. Who of you thinks Scotty bowman could get this team to the playoffs? How does a coach play d? Or be the third or fourth guy in a scrum in defence of his centre or goalie. I agree the team doesn’t play as one. Think maybe the guys who are the team could do something about it?
Oiler sheep. Ummm I mean nation posters seem to believe it is on the coach to do all these things. When was the responsibility of playing as a team removed from the people on the ice and put on the guys in suits. This site needs more hockey fans and less puck bunnies with dangly genitalia.

            • TheBirdOfAnger

Q3: Is the fact that I continue to follow the Oilers by visiting this site (and listening to your radio show) more indicative of A) really swell writing and entertaining public speaking skills on your part or B) some weird, untreatable addiction on my part?

Thanks LT for making my life as an Oilers fan tolerable. I can’t wait until you and the ON boys have better material to cover.

            • TheBirdOfAnger

              So Alan,

When do the Oilers finally make a move and save or do they let this season die? This is honestly pathetic. The farm team is OK, but sort of a dogs breakfast… Even guys like Horak could actually play here now, and the guy jets for the KHL. Doesnt that tell us something…

Gezus Cripes Mac T figure this crap out. We have faith… Or is this a push for Connor McDavid… I sure hope so if it is.

                  • Serious Gord

I have no idea who all of the candidates might be. I am not in a position to know.

This is the wrong time of year to permanently hire a coach and GM. But it is the perfect time to search for a POHO

I have discussed the timeline at length several times before – I will breifly reprise it now:

                    Fire Klowe; fire eakins.

Put Ramsey in as interim coach.

Order nicholson to form a POHO search team and publically announce that Nicholson IS not going to be POHO (he’s not qualified and he is part of the FOKK group)

Prohibit MAcT from making any trades.

            • Petrolero

I don’t know where you’re getting your stats about Daniil Zharkov Lowetide, you had him stuck at 6 games in the KHL long after he was demoted and now you have him stuck at 8 games and not playing this week. The guy has played 16 games in the SHL, same number of points and he did play this week, last game was on the 18th. I know he’s an afterthought, but come on.

            • OKC plays like a team. Was remembering the eighty,s Oilers that was a team they seemed to relish in each others success if They took a penalty sticking up for a team mate.they killed the penalty. This group plays in groups bottom six plays good one day top line plays good one time defense plays well but they don’t seem to have each others back. Nashville Vancouver and especially Calgary plays like a team

            • The Soup Fascist

Said it before ….. Say it again …… Love the retro Alberta Oilers orange jerseys the Barons are wearing.

When the Oilers get good would love to see them up here.

I wonder what jerseys will be made of in 2023?

            • The Soup Fascist

“Kale Kessy is going to force an audition if he keeps playing this well”.

Who cleans up the mess when all the members of the Tobias Rieder fan club simultaneously have their heads explode?

            • Quicksilver ballet

The sole focus should be McDavid. With Eichel being an American I think he would have a preference to stay in his comfort zone. Look at Jeff Petry, now that he’s eligible he’s going to be heading back closer to home.

This is where Oiler management has fallen short. Their window of success is much smaller than they expect with issues such as these. 5 yrs into this rebuild and there isn’t anything that resembles something the players would want to hang around and be a part of.

            • WTF

Would the media please stop interviewing this clown after the games….? ” typical Jersey game, after years of watching them is always the same, they wait, they wait and then they make you pay when you make a mistake or have a turn over” Eakins.

Really moron. Just the Devils have done this? You have won 6 out 20 games…just the Devils? And even if we entertained the premise that they “wait and wait and make you pay” theory, you obviously knew this after years of watching them in the league, so why was your team not prepared? Game plan anyone? Schultz? 20+ minutes? Did he catch you on Whyte Ave hitting on an 18 year old?

Katz you are clown….you obviously don’t care about the fans if your standards are this “KLowe”.

            • I’ve been an avid reader of this site (and a few other sites) for the past couple of years (first time poster). I just want to say Thank You to the content creators who bust their a$$es daily to cover this ongoing tire fire. You guys are the best part about being an oilers fan at this point. The sheer amount of emotion and passion from the nation readers & posters is amazing to see. It is just so very unfortunate that we are stuck with this team as it is right now. I miss the old school mediocrity of the 90’s/00’s. How sad is that?

            • bradleypi

Brad Hunt could put up 200 points on the PP this season and I still wouldn’t want to call him up. At his age, I don’t see him making enough improvement to be an NHL player. Let’s not forget that the PP stunk after the first week or so when he was up here as well.

            • Kadugan

ON, these weekend updates are awesome and muchly appreciated, thanks! Could I just make a request and get you guys to put what position these guys play too?
