davidson ferguson

Brandon Davidson had the best week of any Oilers’ minor league prospect as the young man made his NHL debut this week. On the farm, Anton Lander, Curtis Hamilton and Laurent Brossoit all had good arrows. In junior, Kyle Platzer had another exceptional week in the OHL and Marco Roy is surging in the Q. More after the jump.

  • Curtis Hamilton had another solid week, he might get his first callup if things continue.
  • Josh Winquist made his AHL debut, he’s a smart player who might have a future.
  • Laurent Brossoit’s .916SP is a nice number.
  • Martin Marincin should be in the NHL. Now.

Horak had another nice week, lordy he seems to be a nice player. Slepyshev is pushing the boxcars forward every week, these totals represent a career high. Tyrvainen isn’t setting the world on fire but Zharkov is MIA.

  • 24% body fat

I don’t quite under stand all these ” fancy stats” you used, like goals, assists, GAA and Save percentage.
what I want to know is if visually things are better then last year.

  • 24% body fat

good to see 2010 guys, doing well. A big strong two way forward with git that can help with some offence would be great.

Heres hoping for Pitlick and Hamilton

  • 24% body fat

What the hell happened to the tiny russian wonderkid? Barely over a point per game now on the season and cooling off substantially.

At the start of the year the talk was that we’d need to use a 2nd/3rd round pick to grab the guy if he was still available. He’s on pace to not get drafted again, or at least a late round flyer.

I can’t believe Zharkov. That’s so bad I have to assume it comes down to something outside of hockey. I’m really interested to see what Sleppy can do in the AHL next year.

  • 24% body fat

Let me also say I’m glad Bouchard is tanking as hard as he is. Nothing against the kid personally, but it reinforces the fact that he was a terrible bet to make in the first place.

Anyone who pays attention should be watching Stuart Skinner in the WHL. He grabbed the starting job for the Hurricanes (who are god awful) shortly before his 16th birthday, which is insane. He is a gigantic kid and does a great job keeping that team marginally competitive despite being outshot by 30 per game. A real talent.

  • Burnward

Quick question to advanced stats guys…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t the majority of you behind Pouliot, Nikitin and Purcell?

I could be mistaken but I do seem to remember these moves being looked at favourably. Obviously they aren’t working.

    Any theories as to why?

    • “Advanced stats guys” did like Pouliot, and most still do, but even when he was signed there was some disagreement amongst the stats guys about him.

They were not happy about Nikitin, and the only people especially happy with Purcell were the “yay he’s tall” crowd. All you’d have to do is spend 2 minutes looking at the stats and you would know these two were not players favoured by any form of analytics.

        • This idea going around that the Oilers have suddenly and completely embraced analytics in their decision making process is laughable when most of their decisions still run wildly contrary to the decisions analytics would dictate. Even Brownlee thinks they have gotten cozy with “spreadsheet hockey” as he put it, and it makes no sense.

          • Sevenseven

The biggest stat is the Oilers have more wins with Marincin dressed then without. My grade 2 kid figured that out in his scribbler this week. He is all into analytics.

From a subjective standpoint the only player Justin Schultz plays good is Marincin. Analytics show that too. Sign the paperwork last week.

I’m convinced they are out to at all cost to land McDavid/Eichel. This is not fair to anyone the management is destroing the team.

We need a BCR movement (Boycott Rexall) too.

  • Rich

I like the weekend updates and you mention EVERY league and player but NOT the contracted players in Bakersfield. Are we so off the charts that you have zero clue who we are or are we so unimportant to the Edmonton organization thR we are just not worth mentioning???? Wait,,, we are not in Canada or Europe so that must be why or you hate Obama as much as we do so that must be it.

  • Burnward

Lowetide, is Brossoit looking good? For some reason I feel the team could use some good news about their minor league goaltending. LB’s numbers look good but I know last year he had a tale of two seasons when it came to save percentage.

    • hitchikerforajax

They have good goalie(Brossoit), in the minors & have 2 goalies, “playing” like jr. players, so mangement, leaves the team, struggling. That attitude, leaves the team in last place. Lowe, MacTavish & Eakins, are the 3 Stooges. Is it a wonder why the fans, aren’t making the bucks that these jokers are, because they know more than the Stooges?

  • Oilfaninvan

“Lander had a good week…. Oilers are being really stubborn.”
Clearly the organization is in tank mode. Again. What a great example for the players who struggle with finding a reason to play with any sort of intensity already. This organization is lead by a bunch of douchebags. I’ll bet even Eakins doesn’t want to coach this debacle anymore.

  • Sevenseven

For the love of God let Draisaitl go to the World Jrs! Then back to the W or to Europe even if it permits. Bring up Lander or sign Williams to a cheap deal and bring him upto replace Leon, by the look at their stats they both deserve it.

  • Sevenseven

As we are clearly in tank mode with Uncle Jesse being sent to Bern and replaced with AHL facepunchers, and Davidson instead of Marincin, What players do you see from the AHL given cups of coffee?

Also what do you think the over under on Draisaitl being loaned to Germany. They can’t keep throwing him into the deep end?

  • HardBoiledOil 1.0

Coughlin is actually 11-20-31. Had 1+2 last night on the road and was 1st star.
Leads the Vipers in scoring, is in on roughly 30% of team GF and is 30th in league scoring.
Still not great totals for an overager but he seems to be picking up as the season goes on.

  • Sevenseven

When the current management group finally pulls their head out of their ass……..what they will see is that all of our prospects not being coached by the incredible Hair Doll are all progressing.

Only the players under Eakins are regressing……..everyone else is progressing. This fact alone tells me the plan all along was McDavid.

We will be thanking Eakins in ten years for giving us McDavid……..right now I hate him.

  • HardBoiledOil 1.0

With all of this tank talk of late, we are not solidified in attaining the next great one. Is it not a 20% chance for each of the bottom five teams to pick # 1 overall?

Are we really tanking or are we just this bloody awful? I am going with the awful.

      • MorningOwl

They develop players who post absolutely sick possession stats, some of the best on the team this year by a trip to the press box. Marincin post a 90 percent corsi stat, which is unheard of, and a couple of games later he rides the pine and eventually gets sent to OKC. When the callup comes the Oilers send up Davidson. Nice Story, wrong player.

You wonder if Marincin looked at MacT’s wife, or ran over his dog.

  • Serious Gord

I reject the theory that the management is deliberately tanking the season. You don’t get as emotional as MacT and eakins have at pressers if you are deliberately tanking.

I think they make the roster moves they make for two reasons:

    1. Vanity/ego – they play players they think will make them look better if you succeed. Part in parcel is that this often becomes face-saving – to-hell-with-the-consequences for the team/player. Thus draisaitl won’t be sent back to junior, nikitin and shultz won’t be benched and eakins won’t be fired because doing any of those things would be an admission of failure by MAcT/Klowe.

    2. They are incompetent. Grossly so. This has a compound effect when mixed with number 1 as mistakes made due to incompetence are stuck with out of pride/face-saving.

That these two causes have the effect of yet another bottom-feeding season should be seen as not being a conscious act. These guys are just too inept to be that pre-meditated.

Gretzky said that has never known two guys more competitive than KLOwe ans MACT. And that may be so. But their pride and arrogance are leagues more than their competitiveness.

    • 1. I don’t buy it. MacT has tacitly admitted and rectified mistakes in a timely manner a number of times. I don’t believe for a second that he’d rather lose than admit a mistake.

      2. I don’t believe this to be true either. I think a situation exists where the entire league knows EDM is desperate to make moves and is trying to take advantage.

The idea that “so and so” or “whatshisname” should have been signed is ignorant without knowing what was attempted. It was reported time and time again that EDM was looking for a center, so claiming that they sat on their asses while every media outlet in Canada was saying they were trying to get a center makes no sense.

You can’t sell low just to make deals because the fanbbase is screaming. THAT would be incompetent.

  • kboof

As a season ticket holder for the past 25 years, Davidson’s story, although very touching, he is not a part of the Oilers future. re: Brad Hunt experiment. Please bring up players that are, if there are any.

  • m@s f@s

Should have had Horak here as a C option from the start…OKC callup option at least, and we f’d that up too. I really looked forward to his chance this year..
