OILERS NAME TODD MCLELLAN HEAD COACH

The worst kept secret in the NHL over the past couple weeks has come to fruition as the Edmonton Oilers have named Todd McLellan as the 13th Head Coach in franchise history.

Prior to joining the Oilers, McLellan spent the last 7 years as the head coach of the San Jose Sharks. He left San Jose with a record of 311-163-33-9 and a winning percentage of .637. McLellan will be the most experienced head coach the Oilers have had in recent memory, and will bring some much needed expertise along with him.

I’m new to Alberta and just moved to Calgary. Can anyone here tell me why it smells like i just stepped in a pile of dog sh!t everytime i leave my house?…..Just wondering.

  • Jordan1126

Is everybody as happy as i am about the new “trans-gender” washrooms? I’ve been waiting for this since my operation. Now “It put the lotion into the basket”!!

    • Jordan McNugent-Hallkins

More intellectual discussion for you here, Al.

Juuuust kidding buddy, I don’t want another argument.

EDIT: And thanks, Alsker! Glad someone appreciates my lowbrow antics. When I first switched the picture to McLellan, I’d start reading my own comments without realizing it. I was just too used to Krueger.

  • Jordan McNugent-Hallkins

I wouldn’t even get into it, Zarn. It doesn’t matter how well you dismantle everything he says, you’ll just end up calling him a doofus. And I’ve never really known you for your restraint when it comes to calling out morons.

  • Zarny

    @ultrathinzigzags

No. Burke was fired Jan. 9, 2013 prior to the lockout season starting. Burke exited off the Leafs’ 26th place performance where they missed the playoffs by 12 pts.

Bos and SJ missed by a combined 10 pts and have better overall records than Calgary’s front office and look at the success they’ve had. 16th!!

It’s great to see Flames fans like you so excited the Oilers finally have better management.

  • Jordan McNugent-Hallkins

…anyway, who else is watching the Ducks/Hawks? That header by Shaw was one of the coolest plays I’ve ever seen, shame it didn’t count.

  • Kevwan

Listening to McLelland speak , you get the impression Oilers have been mirred in antiquity with their strategies on how to play the game over the last decade .

  • Kevwan

Heh ON – replace the banner ads for one day with this quote:

“We’re not gonna talk about playoffs. We’re gonna talk about creating a foundation and identity” – McLellan

    That is awesome. Period.

Eakins would still be talking about funny stories of how a fitness bar made a change a kids life on the Marlies. What a clown.

  • Joy S. Lee

OMG, I was almost losing it by the time I got to this last page. As admiralmark said, farcical, but it was getting a bit much.

The hilarious part is that he did it with mirrors; facts composed of complete rubbish, presented with closely related near-facts. Most of us argued, and multiple others factually proved him wrong in nearly every harsh statement, and yet he managed to both lead and dominate the entire conversation for almost it’s full duration. Fascinating, and a little weird.

Wow. Uh… What the hell were we talking about again?

  • Anton CP

I was looking back for the almost whole month of blog titles, 19 pages ago it was grim and depressing then BAM! All of sudden that anything prior from 19 pages ago seem to be an ancient history. No one was looking forward to next season after MacT’s presser and then everyone can’t wait for the season to start already!

    • Sheldon "Oilers Fan for Life!!!"

I was looking back and after winning the lottery the troll’s increased. After Signing a New GM the trolls increased. After Signing a Head coach the trolls increased. It is starting to look like all we do is respond to trolls! What will happen if we have a winning season?

  • Jordan McNugent-Hallkins

Three year extension for the Hamburglar. I really hope Ottawa pins their hopes on he and O’Connor, it would be glorious to pry the only proven starter out of there.

EDIT: just read McLellan is the second fastest coach to 300 wins in NHL history. Another cherry on this awesome cake the Oil have baked this off season. I take back everything I said about Katz, he could go down as the greatest owner in franchise history. If Puck hadn’t sold Gretzky, it would be no contest. But he did, so…

    • YFC Prez

Pocklington was a virus. A total cancer on the alberta province. Everything he ever touched turned to mold.

The Gretzky sale is so low on the list of his shady deals.

      • camdog

There is no Gretzky in Edmonton, there are no 5 Stanley Cups and there quite possibly no hockey team in Edmonton without Pocklington. He might be a con man, he might not be a very good person, but for 10 years Edmontonians lived the high life with Pocklington.

        • jonnyquixote

          High Life for some.

The workers at Gainers who Pocklington tried to screw out of their pensions when he left don’t attribute those great years to him but more to Sather and the players.

  • Sheldon "Oilers Fan for Life!!!"

All the horse dung still lingers in Calgary after the stampede. This has a major effect on the most Flamer fans thought process.I get a sense of worry from Flame fans. The Flames have a inferiority complex.I dont blame them we will be back on top of the mountain soon.Your team had its fun for a year.We like many championships in this city.

  • pkam

For some strange reason I find myself hoping that the Maple Leafs ending up winning the Babcock Sweepstakes.

Imagine what it must be like to be a Leaf fan. We are suffering because the Oilers have been horrid for 9 years. The Leafs have accomplished nothing in almost 50 years. That is inconceivable.

So I hope they empty the piggy bank. Pa Babcock a fortune. Put together the best team their cap money can buy. Get used to losing to the Oilers for the next decade.

To quote the A Team – I love it when a plan coms together.

  • pkam

Worst comments section ever on a blog. Too many losers or people trying to respond or reason with them. Sorry to any intelligent comments I missed, I stopped reading about 1/3 of the way down.

    • lchnssmnstr

100% Bear. I just scrolled through and trashed every troll related post. Enjoy the hockey conversation, but not the childrens’ banter. I say ignore the trolls and they will go away.

Except for bagged milk’s. That is the way to respond!

  • Andy7190

My the Oilers are having a decidedly un-Oiler like summer.

The moves appear to make great hockey sense for a change and the hires are fantastic.

    This might actually pay off.

Don’t expect playoffs next season. It could happen, just as it did for Flames, but a fantastic team like LA missed the playoffs.

    So it is hard.

But the Oilers should be in the race right up to the end, and who knows…

    This team will finally improve!

  • Jordan McNugent-Hallkins

I guess you’re right, Sather was the main man there, Pocklington just footed the bill. McDavid is retribution for the price we paid to raise interest in hockey through the States.

  • TKB2677

Thank god the Oilers didn’t get into this insanity over Babcock and went after and got who I think is the best fit in McLellan. This whole Babcock thing screams chest puffing ego boost for Babcock. The Oilers don’t need that from the head coach.

  • TKB2677

The Leafs have lousy prospect depth, they have no GM, they have a roster loaded with overpaid, lazy, don’t give a crap players that quit on their coach for more than half the season. Plus they are in the most highly covered and critical hockey market in the NHL. Babcock is clearly going to the Leafs for no reason other than the money. He should walk into the presser doing the Manziel money signs with his hands.

There is no possible way he can spin it to say the Leafs were the best coaching opportunity available. The last thing the Oilers needed was an egomaniac, greedy coach.

    • pkam

No need to trash Babcock, he is still the best coach available even though the Oilers prefer McLellan.

Yes, the Leafs are probably the worst NHL team at the moment, but it also means it is the most challenging team for a coach and the best team to demonstrate and prove one’s coaching ability. And it gives the coach the biggest satisfaction when he succeeds.

What does it say when you can turn this team around when so many coaches before you have failed.

  • Kevwan

Now I’m downright glad we didn’t sign Babcock. 8 years for $50M for $6.25M per year?!?! That’s just Babcock being greedy and Toronto management being stupid and having too much money to play around. I’d laugh if Babcock gets fired in the 2nd or 3rd year of the contract.

    • Alsker

Wow is right! Maybe Babcock can make them competitive again . Now they need a defacto GM that will leave player pick ups mainly to Babcock . I suggest MacT.. Wonder what McLelland gets in comparison ?

  • Randaman

Babcock did what was best for him and his family.

Good for him and the underpaid coaching fraternity.

I am so glad we signed Todd despite the few that thought we should have held out for Babcock.

Man, this is going to be a long summer…

  • Alsker

I cannot believe all the trash talking whining and bad mouthing going on over Babcock signing with the Leafs.

Babcock is a prairie boy who became the highest rated hockey coach in the world. He then cashed in on the richest contract ever offered to a coach in the NHL.

Why is every body attacking him? Just shows how petty and envy ridden some people are.

What Babcock does or gets has little or no bearing on you as individuals and has little or no bearing on the Oilers. They have signed a fantastic coach of their choosing. Get a life.
