Enjoy your posts and your morning spot on tsn 1260.
Any insight on to the projection of Ziyat Paigin? I realize he’s a few years away…but like to see some comparables if available

He is a big man, saw him good at the WJs a year ago and remembered his name when EDM drafted him. The scouting reports talk about his wingspan and his shot, he looks like he has good speed but a lot of kids fail because of their footspeed. He is an older prospect for a new draft pick, so the Oilers might sign him in the spring. VERY intriguing prospect, always dangerous getting excited about late-round picks (believe me, I know).

That Ethan Bear kid sure is looking good right now. He’s leading the WHL among defencemen and is tied for 20th overall.

      And he’s a right-handed shot!

I saw Bear play live recently and was impressed.

But I’m really intrigued with Ziyat Paigin. This guy is getting good minutes from a decent KHL club and is producing really well over 26 games. He’s a 6″6′ defender!
Is he on the Russia’s world junior roster??

Compared to this year’s WJC selection camp roster, based on points per game and Rob Vollman’s NHL equivalencies (0.37 for Hockey-East, 0.32 for OHL, 0.27 for WHL, 0.26 for QMJHL) only two players are clearly ahead of Bear (Lauzon and Sanheim), and only a few others (Dermott, Dunn, Hicketts, and McKeown) are even close.

      Ethan Bear (WHL), 30 GP, 9-25-34, 1.13 PPG/0.31 NHLE
      Thomas Chabot (QMJHL), 22 GP, 7-13-20, 0.91 PPG/0.24 NHLE
      Jakob Chychrun (OHL), 28 GP, 5-17-22, 0.76 PPG/0.24 NHLE
      Travis Dermott (OHL), 29 GP, 2-25-27, 0.93 PPG/0.30 NHLE
      Vince Dunn (OHL), 26 GP, 8-16-24, 0.92 PPG/0.29 NHLE
      Haydn Fleury (WHL), 24 GP. 7-13-20, 0.83 PPG/0.22 NHLE
      Joe Hicketts (WHL), 29 GP, 2-28-30, 1.03 PPG/0.28 NHLE
      Brandon Hickey (Hockey-E), 16 GP, 5-2-7, 0.44 PPG/0.16 NHLE
      Noah Juulsen (WHL), 24 GP, 3-8-11, 0.46 PPG/0.12 NHLE
      Jérémy Lauzon (QMJHL), 26 GP, 5-29-34, 1.31 PPG/0.34 NHLE
      Roland McKeown (OHL), 30 GP, 6-22-28, 0.93 PPG/0.30 NHLE
      Travis Sanheim (WHL), 24 GP, 8-23-31, 1.29 PPG/0.35 NHLE

      Here’s Paigin’s NHLE’s (0.80 for KHL) for comparison:

      Ziyat Paigin (KHL), 26 GP, 3-9-12, 0.46 PPG/0.37 NHLE

So yeah, Paigin is looking really good here, but I kind of feel bad for Bear (born 1997) being overlooked for this year’s WJC squad.

Thanks for the research on the Bear info and your right, I would have like to see him on the WJ roster, he deserves a spot but I don’t know the style they are playing. Bear is 5’11” 200 lbs and build like a brick house. He skates well, solid first pass but not sure if he has shutdown defensive skills that the team may have wanted for players not in top 4 spots.

All I know is i did research in him after he was drafted and with his points pace being over double last year, this kid has the will to play hard and improve.

Does anyone know if he is a physical player or hits a lot of people? fights?

Bear will fight, but he’s not a scrapper. Using Darnell last year as a comparison, their scoring is similar (Nurse had 33 points in 36 games), but Bear’s only got 18 PIMs compared to Nurse’s 56.

Tough to get situational analytics out of the CHL, so we’ll probably just have to wait to see more, but Bear finished +23 last year and is +8 so far this year. Nurse finished +11 in the Soo. Read from that what you will.

Would like to know more about Caleb Jones, 13th in defensive scoring as a rookie. He has done much better offensively than I expected and defense was his strength
