Two weeks ago we had a slow update. This week’s Weekend Update is overdrive in comparison.
The goaltending situation in the AHL and NHL gets murkier with the addition of Montoya to the team. Brossoit has been sent down to get more playing time. Pasquale in Bakersfield puts his best foot forward this week with two shutouts, raising his SV% up a full .030 points. The defense in California also gets a little more crowded (even after the Oilers punted Fayne from the organization) with Eric Gryba being sent down. The Oilers signed Cameron Hebig to a contract and suddenly our junior hockey ranks look (maybe not are) that much better. Benson and Pakarinen are tearing it up on their own respective teams.
First off you can have a peek at how our four players chosen for their respective WJHC countries faired.

Chiarelli gutted this team.
Banned in Boston, Ottawa, and Harvard. All of his teams look like they have cement in their skates.
He is a bad GM.
He did get Talbot, Maroon, Kassian, and Nilsson in some good trades. He also did get some quality D prospects in Berglund and Cairns in some good trades as well. Say what you will about the bigger trades, but he has made many good, small trades. If Reinhart turned out to be the player everyone thought he would be, or if Chiarelli used the two picks to get Larsson in the first place, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
Anyway, Benson and Maksimov are looking good.
and there are numerous blogs on this site to talk about that in.
How about we talk about the prospects in this thread? The one things Chiarelli has been very good at since he took over is drafting.
Bakersfield is going to get a nice influx of talent up front next year in Hebig, Yamamoto and Benson.
With
Maksimov is absolutely killing it. Had his 6 game goal scoring streak snapped last night but got back to scoring goals tonight. He’s fifth in the OHL in goals with 3-4 less games played than 3 of the players ahead of him.
Samorukov is playing great right now – he was getting a larger role for team Russia as the tournamnet went on and is playing great for Guelph and producing decent boxcars.
I was really impressed with Rasanen at the tournament. He played a huge role for team Finland – played in all situations (ES, PP, PK, 4 on 4) and was over 60% in faceoffs. He was great on the PP as a net front presence and really liked getting to the net at evens. Who knows if he’ll ever get close to the NHL but I like him as a right shot 2-way center – I’m pulling for him.
Need to see how it compares to all other teams. Chia also spent good picks on Reinhart. That was a huge fail and should have been axed when he heard they didn’t properly scout him.
Shut up about Reinhart. No one asked
Really impressed with Benson hope he can keep it up.
to his credit, Chia and his scouting staff’s picks look much better than the Old Boys Club picks!
And sorry that angry post was directed at the old boys club, not you haha. You re right, chia does draft much better than them! So many wasted picks
@Roberto hindsight….
But he should have taken debrinkat with that pick. Me and many others commented on that before the pick and after the draft when debrinkat was still available. Didn’t he score against the oil last game? His 15th?
Reading comments from the Edmonton Sports media tonight I have to say I’m not the least bit surprised. The usual gaggle of writers have circled the wagons and are pumping out the approved party vomit. Not one of them has ever thought an original thought.
If I was an opposing GM, which one of these prospects would be a sought after prospect?
Probably Safin imo
Most of the oilers had a career year last year. So they were loaded with players to trade for top dollar. Now here we go again. If you think some of the last trades were bad, prepare for more or none period. Waiting for future prospects to develope is another way of saying I screwed up and have zero options left.
Kirill Maksimov has (25G 18A, 43PTS in 36 games)
Correct!
Did Laurent Brossoit clear waivers – does anyone know?
Mike Modano’s Dog when he played for the Prince Albert Raiders.
Of course Laurent Brossoit cleared waivers 🙂
I sure hope you didn’t lose any sleep last night wondering.
