The Edmonton Oilers announced that defenceman, Oscar Klefbom, has undergone a successful shoulder surgery and is expected to make a full recovery in 5-6 weeks.
It’s been a tough year for Klefbom as the defenceman was excellent for the Edmonton Oilers last year but was not able to replicate those successes in 2017-18. To his credit, Klefbom has been playing injured all season and it’s understandable that his play would be affected by a problemed shoulder. For a defenceman, the inability to shoot and feel confident when battling in the corners is a sizeable hindrance and it is in the Oilers’ best interest to get this problem addressed as quickly as possible.
After undergoing a minor procedure just under two weeks ago to see if further action was required, Klefbom was shut down for the remainder of the year earlier this week. While there are plenty of rumours surrounding the smooth-skating Swede, it is not yet known what the future will hold for him. Considering his excellent contract and ability to produce offence from the back end, it would seem obvious that the Oilers would want to keep him for as long as possible. A pessimist, however, might suggest that Klefbom has only played one full season in his professional career and moving him while there is still value could be the Oilers’ best bet at improving for next year.
While we will have to wait and see what the future holds for Klefbom and the Oilers, today’s news is positive in that his surgery was a success and that he will only miss five or six weeks before he is able to start training again for next year. Have we seen the last of him in an Oilers’ uniform? Time will tell.
