Oilers Prospect Update: We’re back

Happy Canadian thanksgiving to all. For those of you who haven’t been here before, I will be bringing you a weekly update on all the players under contract with the Oilers in some fashion (some AHL contracts here too). Statistics updates AND when I can find them, video highlights too.

The system’s check up, your one stop shop for all Oilers prospects and players under contract not playing for the big club is back. Hockey has returned to Oil country (well Sweden so far) and that means the players in the system are also active.

There are some new faces from last year’s update for you to be introduced to.

Boston College opened their season yesterday – Rasanen had a goal, McPhee had a goal and an assist and Dudek (not a real prospect in my mind) had an assist.

I’ve watched both Condors’ games and Jones 2 points doesn’t do justice to how he’s played. He’s been the best player on the ice both games. He is skating miles and transitioning the puck quickly and efficiently while also jumping up to the join the rush – very very confident out there.

Benson’s numbers as well don’t do him justice – he’s been prominant – while he’s made a couple really tough turnovers in the two games, his skill is apparent at this level and he seems to always be on the right side of the puck.

One thing on McLeod, he is taking an enormous amount of faceoffs – he’s gone 18 for 30, 18 for 30 and 23 for 28 the last three games. He’s taking double (sometimes more) faceoffs than the next closet Steelhead.

Also to note, Safin has missed the last few games with a lower body injury – he’s day to day – not sure if its related to the hip issue he was dealing with in camp.

Is this serious or are you one of “those”?

The numbers in Bakersfield are sparkling – they’ve scored 9 goal in 2 games. I’m not concerned about Evan Polei or Keegan Lowe not producing on opening weekend.

There is one European not performing and he isn’t a real prospect anymore (Yakimov).

CHL numbers are great except Safin who has only played 2 games and has been hurt since before camp (hip flexor at camp and now has a lower body injury).

Means little? Yeah, I guess nobody likes having prospects who have some success. The better the prospects perform the less we have to complain about, and who wants that?
