2019 All-Star Game Wrap Up

The NHL All-Star Game and weekend in San Jose has concluded. The Metropolitan All Stars won the 3-on-3 tournament against the Central All Stars in the finals. Let’s take a look at some of the best moments from the 3-on-3 tournament.

Central All Stars vs. Pacific All Stars

Mikko Rantanen opens up the scoring. John Gibson is used to a poor defensive effort in front of him, but he couldn’t stop this one.

Connor McDavid to Erik Karlsson for the Pacific All Stars. Why can’t this be a full-time thing? Leon Draisaitl holds Gabriel Landeskog enough for Karlsson to finish on the breakaway.

Gibson finally makes a save after allowing 7 goals on 9 shots and the San Jose crowd lets Gibson hear it.

Marc-Andre Fleury goes for the poke check, and, well, Ryan O’Reilly puts home the 9-1 goal for the Central All Stars.

Metropolitan All Stars vs. Atlantic All Stars

Mat Barzal feeds Sidney Crosby and he opens the scoring with a sweet shot down the middle.

Steven Stamkos goes some skill going between the legs to score to make it 2-2. What a goal.

Kris Letang is a defenceman you’d expect to score on a breakaway and he does.

Central All Stars vs. Metropolitan All Stars

Barzal scores with a sick shot that beats Devan Dubnyk.

Henrik Lundqvist makes a giant save to keep the Central All Stars off the board. Claude Giroux eventually gets his own rebound to put the Metropolitan All Stars up 2-0.

Random Thoughts

  • 3-on-3 is an improvement on the previous format, but a 20-minute game is still too long.
  • Gibson wasn’t feeling any of it.
  • Pekka Rinne should have taken the hockey stick and tried to play up the ice.
  • I didn’t mind Kevin Bieksa on the Sportsnet broadcast. Bieksa is more interesting than most of the ex-players that go into media.
  • Gritty should have been MVP.

Only thing i really cared about was fastest skater and the 3 on 3. Real weak performances by Connor and Drai in the 3 on 3 game. What were they like -5? I hate that all the other teams looked like they were actually trying to win while the Pacific just glided around. I guess there is a reason pacific is the weakest in the league. Dissappinting considering the magic they could have made with guys like Karl, Burns and Johnny G.

What’s disappointing is Crosby winning the MVP … Please!! Give it to someone that is a little less recognized as in maybe Seth Jones, ABC …. That’s Anybody But Crosby!!

    • Clayton

Yea, except he was the best player of the day! At least he bothered showing up and trying unlike Connor and Drai…HUGE disappointment in how those two just didn’t even bother. Though by now we shouldn’t be surprised. Their team got down early and they shut down! Typical Drai and Connor move!

It was actually very annoying how little Draisaitl tried, McDavid too to a lesser degree. I realize it’s a meaningless game but I actually lost some respect for him after yesterday.

    • Rufio Barcoli

Drai tried during the All-Star game as hard as Nurse tries during the regular season game.
Nurse plays with the intensity of a wet fart and Drai tried his best to emulate that this weekend.

  • Oiler Al

Drai played like he p[lays many of his league games, half the the time with his head up where the sun don’t shine.I thinkMcDavid wanted to be humble and not show off?,or he drank same koolaide as Dria.

  • Alberta Ice

Maybe there is a reason the Metro has won the Stanley Cup the last 3 years running. High chance #4 in a row coming up this year too unless Lightning strikes it.

Boring. MAny of the players looked bored – disinterested. Need to find a format that gets buy-in from the players. I have no idea what that would be. But it seems, nor does anyone in the NHL…
