Oilers Prospect Update: Evan on fire

Our OHL prospects and Olivier Rodrigue in the Q, all live on to play in round two of their respective series. Only Ostap Safin and his Halifax Mooseheads are at risk of an early exit. Another huge week for Bouchard with London and some of the Condors as well as they prepare for playoffs.

Just one prospect worthy news item this week with Brad Malone being sent down:

Oilers place Brad Malone on waivers

Working through some reporting issues for the playoffs of individual leagues, but have broken off a second section for the CHL players (and will add the others as I find them)

Bouchard’s doing well playing against other junior players. If the Oilers have any brains they will let/make him play a full year in the American League. Wait till he’s busting at the seams down there before he joins the big club. But this being the Oilers… well we’ll wait and see on if the have learnt a single GDamn thing over the last 13 years.

    • OriginalPouzar

Maksimov will 100% be in the AHL next year. He has an advanced 2-way game. Its not well known but he’s not just an offensive player – he’s a solid 2-way player who is a plus penalty killer. With that said, he still has plenty of work to do on his skating and decision making.

His arrows are straight up but he’s not an NHL option for next year.

  • OilCan2

Bouchard is looking awesome. It would be cool if he got into the Condors playoffs this spring and paired with Jones. 2.5 points per game in the playoffs; yikes.

    • OriginalPouzar

The money isn’t really a factors – those vets are under contract so their cap hits apply no matter what (just over $1M can be buried if assigned to AHL).

There is little doubt that Bouchard will have a great camp and produce in the pre-season. He will dazzle with some stretch passes and look good.

At the same time, its been proven that preseason means essentially nothing with respect to proving NHL readiness. We’ve seen this year over year with the performances of guys like Bouchard, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, etc.

      • GK1980

That’s true, do you think Bouchard will be on the oilers roster maybe middle next season and stick after play in the AHL for a few months, barring a good showing dowin there of course.

    • OriginalPouzar

John Marino is a real prospect (although they may need to trade his rights shortly or risk losing him if he decides to forego his senior year and turn pro).

Phil Kemp has big up arrows – he was great for the US at the world juniors this year – making that team as such a low pick is remarkable in its own right let alone how well he played.

McPhee and Rasanen had poor years at Boston College.

Here is a question. Does anyone think that Yakimov and Slepyshev should even be considered a prospect for the Oilers? I know they still own their rights but are either of those 2 ever coming back to North America? I doubt it. Plus even if they wanted too, why would the Oilers want those 2? Yakimov played 50 games and all he could score was 5 goals and 16 pts. Slepyshev played 56 games and scored 15 goals, 25 pts. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but the KHL could probably be considered on par with the AHL. There is the odd really high end guy but most of the best players in that league are former high end AHLers who are tweener NHLers. So if Yakimov and Slep can’t be dominate in the KHL, no chance they can be full time NHLers.

    • OriginalPouzar

Yakimov is long gone but I don’t think the door is closed on Slepyshev – I would imagine they’d qualify him again this off-season to keep his rights. No reason not to, he won’t have a contract (unless he’s coming back and signs) so it doesn’t count against the 50 limit. His rights could be a small piece to add to a trade.

KHL is probably equivalent to the AHL, I agree there, however it is a lower scoring league so numbers are generally lower. I would be wrong but I believe they don’t give out second assists.
