Oilers Prospect Update: You want Samorukov?

The Condors are off to the second round of the AHL playoffs with a 3-1 series win over the Colorado Avalanche affiliate, Colorado Eagles. They will now move on to face the Anaheim Ducks affiliate, San Diego Gulls.

In the OHL playoffs, Dmitri Samorukov has had a scalding hot week this week, netting a hat trick to help stave off elimination at the hands of fellow Oilers prospect Ryan McLeod and his Saginaw Spirit. In the QMJHL, Ostap Safin’s Halifax Mooseheads are up 3-2 in a series against Olivier Rodrigue’s Drummondville Voltigeurs. When both those series wrap up the Oilers will have one prospect in the finals of both leagues.

Let’s check in on how all the prospects are doing in their playoff matchups.

This update will continue until all prospects are done (For all regular season statistics, click here)

The veteran line (Russell/Malone/Joe G) and the energy line (Polei/Vesel/Gust) have been huge in this series – the top kid line has played well but unable to cash until Benson’s 3 assists last night – his first assist – the perfect sauce to for the Callahan breakaway was Drai-like – just a wonderful pass.

  • OriginalPouzar

2 of Samorukov’s goals the other night were absolute beauties where he brought the puck in from the point and used his skating to take the puck to the net and buried each chance.

What wonderful arrows on this all-tools player.

    • Kepler62c

Ya, I feel like he’s the kind of player we just haven’t been able to draft-and-develop in what seems like forever. He could have a very long career here in Edmonton as a solid middle six winger — along the lines of Donskoi, Meier, or (disregarding his 77 point season this year) Hertl, the kind of players that the Oilers just lack (been watching a lot of SJS lately).

Caggiula was supposed to be another guy like that, never a superstar but a solid contributor, and I feel like they rushed him to the NHL with no AHL time and just ruined his development. No way to know what a year in AHL would have looked like for him.

Those are 2 first round draft picks and a guy they didn’t draft and hasn’t played a game in the minors….maybe check facts before beating the development narrative. (Edm selected Nurse and McDavid with their two first round picks in those years)

  • OilTastic

excited that we FINALLY have some defensive depth coming up with Bear, Jones, Bouchard and Samorukov on the way ! at least Chia and his boys did decent with the 4 drafts they were involved in, the Reinhart trade aside !

    • Kepler62c

It’s kind of scary how much D depth they have, someone in the organization better know how to assess talent before they make any trades from “areas of strength”.

    • Wadentheshade

KG should be given credit for proper drafting over the last few years. He’s certainly good at that. Chai didn’t do much good for this team. The cupboards are finally starting to fill up with some up and comers. Now that Benson is healthy he looks like a winner.

  • Abagofpucks

I like what i see on the farm and in the ohl, looks like we have the makings of the calvery coming over the hill defensively in the next 18 months. And a few wingers , and a 3rd line center we really need, at worst 4th line witch we can use.

  • OilCan2

Grabbing a big right winger like Dach would be a good start in the draft. Targeting some good, fast skating players in the next rounds would be a good haul in the Vancouver draft. It would be cool to see Bouchard tear some twine and crush the Gulls.
