Oilers Prospect Update: Condors out and Safin vs Samorukov

The Condors were unable to stop the San Diego Gulls in game 6 of the series, and their record-setting season is over. Tyler Benson finishes as the regular season point leader (15-51-66) followed up by Cooper Marody (19-45-64) and Joseph Gambardella (29-19-48). In their playoff run, Brad Malone shone brightest with thirteen points in ten games. With much speculation surrounding first-year head coach Jay Woodcroft going to Los Angeles with Todd McClellan, the core of this group is signed through next year with Brad Malone, Mitch Callahan and Ryan Stanton scheduled to hit free agency. It will be an interesting offseason for the Condors.

In the CHL, the memorial cup kicked off with both Ostap Safin (Halifax Mooseheads) and Dmitri Samorukov (Guelph Storm) amongst the ranks vying for the nation’s highest major junior prize. Safin’s host Mooseheads kicked off the tournament with a win over the Prince Albert Raiders and then win over Samorukov’s Storm Sunday night. The news for Samorukov’s Guelph team is not all bad news as they will be playing in at the very least a tie-breaker after their win over the QMJHL champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.

This update will continue until all prospects are done (For all regular season statistics, click here)

My goodness, what a performance from Samorukov last night against Halifax. Yes, the boxscore says one assist and a minus 2 but that doesn’t do his game justice. Samorukov was an absolute beast and a wall defensively last night. Aggressive defending the blueline, great stick to break up rushes, always on the right side of the puck and a beast on the boards – he is so good at battling on the boards, almost always comes away with the puck.

He didn’t have a great offensive game but, my goodness, was he impressive last night.

Also, I don’t even think I’m exaggerating by speculating that he played 16-17 minutes in the third period – he barely left the ice.
