It was on this day in @Edmonton Oilers history that a young Wayne Gretzky registered his 103rd assist on the season, breaking Bobby Orr’s record for the most helpers in a single season.
On April 1st, 1981, Wayne Gretzky put up a pair of assists in a 4-4 tie against the Colorado Rockies that made a little bit of history for the Great One. Bringing himself to 103 assists on the season, Gretzky broke the record held by Bobby Orr since 1970-71 when he assisted on goals by Jari Kurri in the first and second period.
The ’81 season marked the start of an 11-year run where Gretzky topped the 100 assist plateau, a decade where he smashed his own assist record several times over. Gretzky still holds the record for most assists in a regular season after he put up a mindblowing 163 helpers in 1985-86.
