Edmonton Oilers defenceman Mike Green is set to retire.

The news was shared by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on the 31 Thoughts podcast alongside Jeff Marek.

Green was acquired by the Oilers this year at the NHL’s trade deadline in exchange for Kyle Brodziak and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft.

The condition on the pick was that it would upgrade to a 2021 3rd round pick if Edmonton advanced to the conference finals, and if Green played in 50% of remaining games. Neither condition was met.

Green retires a two-time NHL all-star having played in 880 games over a long, 15-year career. Drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 1st round of the 2004 NHL draft, Green established himself as one of the best offensive defencemen in the late 2000’s.

Over hs career, he scored 150 goals and 501 points finishing second in the Norris trophy voting twice in 2008-08 and 2009-10.

Edmonton acquired Green to help provide some veteran depth on defence, but suffered a torn MCL in only his second game with the Oilers. He opted out of the NHL’s return-to-play.
