Oilers winger Evander Kane underwent knee surgery Thursday in Edmonton, getting a procedure done that is unrelated to his previous abdominal surgery, the team said in a statement Friday.
The latest surgery for Kane, the club said, carries a four-to-eight-week timetable for his recovery, but most notably, it will pause his recovery from the abdominal surgery he underwent in September. Kane had surgery done to repair a multitude of injuries, and has been rehabilitating since.
Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported Friday that he recently heard Kane’s recovery from his prior surgery would’ve kept him out of the lineup until mid-March, at the earliest, and pondered about how this latest procedure will affect things.
“Does that stack this on top of the end of the timeline for Kane?” Seravalli said on Daily Faceoff LIVE. “If you tack on four-to-eight weeks to that, I don’t know if that’s the case or if that’s how the math works, but really interesting none the less, because it would seemingly put Kane out until the playoffs, which would allow the Oilers to use his LTIR space.”
Stacking that timeline would mean Kane would be out of the Oilers lineup until the middle of May, right around the end of Edmonton’s regular season, which concludes on May 16th.
The Oilers enter Friday with $447,536 in cap space, according to PuckPedia, with defenceman Josh Brown currently on the roster. Kane’s placement on the Long Term Injured Reserve would allow them to exceed the salary cap by $5.124-million.
Kane dealt with injuries last season but played through them, appearing in 77 regular season games, scoring 24 goals and 44 points, while adding four goals and eight points in 20 playoff games.
