The Edmonton Oilers have traded winger Viktor Arvidsson to the Boston Bruins for a 5th-round pick in 2027, Daily Faceoff’s Irfan Gaffar reported Tuesday.
Arvidsson, 32, signed a two-year, $4-milllion AAV deal with the Oilers last summer, but never seemed to be able to put his game together in his first year with the team. He scored 15 goals and 27 points in 67 regular season games, adding two goals and seven points in 15 playoff games.
His tenure was marked by inconsistency in his game, highlighted by his dwindling minutes in the postseason. While he played in all six games of the Oilers’ first round series against the Los Angeles Kings, he would play in three of five games against the Golden Knights, two of five against the Dallas Stars and four of six against the Florida Panthers.
While Arvidsson was a solid play driver for the team, contributing offence at a seven percent rate above league average, defence at a five percent rate below league average and his overall contributions equalling that of a low-end second line winger, acccording to HockeyViz, the Oilers simply didn’t have the cap space to keep him around for the second year of his deal.
Now, Arvidsson will head to Boston where he will get a chance to be a staple in the Bruins’ top-six.
The Oilers entered July 1st with roughly half a million dollars in cap space, but moving Arvidsson and his full contract, along with sending Max Jones to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors ahead of the season, would give the team roughly $5.5-million in cap space.
Players like Corey Perry and Connor Brown are expected to test the free agent market in the coming days, with there being uncertainty if the Oilers will sign them or not.
Edmonton retained two players ahead of free agency Monday, signing centre Noah Philp to a one-year, $775,000 contract and winger Kasperi Kapanen to a one-year, $1.3-million contract.
